Default Russia to Moldova: learn from South Ossetia

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080827/...ldova_russia_2

Okay, it may be a few days old but nevertheless.

Ambassador Valeri Kuzmin spoke at a news conference in the capital of the former Soviet republic of Moldova late Tuesday, hours after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recognized the independence of the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Kuzmin, speaking in the name of the Foreign Ministry in Moscow, acknowledged that the situation in the Russian-supported Moldovan region of Trans-Dniester, which is mainly populated by Russians and Ukrainians, differed from that of the Caucasus. He also said there was no sign of a Moldovan intention to escalate tensions.
Unlike the Georgian regions, neither Trans-Dniester nor the rest of Moldova, whose population is mostly Romanian-speaking, borders Russia.
Trans-Dniester, a long strip of territory on Moldova's eastern border with Ukraine, broke away from Moldova in 1990 and a war between Moldovan forces and separatists in 1992 left 1,500 people dead.
It is not recognized internationally, but is supported by Russia, which has 1,500 troops stationed there to guard weapons storage facilities left by the Soviet military.
Kuzmin said Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia because of "Georgia's aggression against South Ossetia," and said, "Moldova should draw its own positive conclusions after the conflict in South Ossetia."
"It is simply impossible ... to have Moldova behave in a similar way to Georgia," he said in Russian.
"I believe that (in Moldova) the leaders will use their wisdom ... to not allow such a bloody and catastrophic trend of events" here, he said.
But he added he was glad "there is no intention to escalate the situation in the security zone (a demilitarized area along the Dniester River) and I believe that there shouldn't be any."
Russia's President Medvedev met with Moldova's President Vladimir Voronin on Monday in the Black Sea port of Sochi to discuss Trans-Dniester.
After the meeting, Voronin said the issue would only be solved through negotiations. He said a solution to the conflict will be drafted based on current law that gives Trans-Dniester gives broad autonomy but within Moldova's borders.

They also said the same thing to Georgia. Russia should keep to their own business, not find some excuse to invade another country.

And yes, Ukrainian civilians got involved last time. So did the Russian 14th.

Do you actually think Russia will start a war so close to EU and NATO borders?

And if by a stretch of imagination this were true Romania would come on Moldova side and the Russian 14th army would be out of there in 24 hours.

But as I said there wont be a Moldovan-Russian war.

Was Georgia given a choice? And I'd suppose Ukraine would be sick and tired of Russia.

You mean when it chose to shell a city where it knew russian citizens and un-backed peacekeepers were? It seems to me that it had the choice to do just that, or maintain the status quo thats been going for almost 20 years. You can debate the legality/morality of russia's actions, but you cannot debate the fact that the conflict did not escalate until georgia chose to take certain actions...

Moldova is not stupid to attack transnistria and russia will not start a war so close to EU and NATO borders.

But what happens in Moldova at the moment is tragic their history books paint Romania as oppressors invaders and other they tried to wipe out the romanian language there and countless other .

And the Moldovian language me its the same as romanian they just renamed it.

Maybe the communists will lose in the next election i hope so ahh but who knows.

But i dont want Romania to unite with them if we ever get an opportunity i would just want them to get in the EU and NATO so they have free travel and can improve their economy.

If Romania unites with them now our vulnerable economy will turn into .

So I advocate Moldova joining the EU and possibly NATO but not unification with romania at this time.

    This was to be expected.

Transnistria's "president" Igor Smirnov even asked for an aditional 2000 peacekeepers on it's territory to reinforce the 1000 troops that were already there.

It's clear that the "frozen" conflicts in eastern Europe are getting warmer by the day...

Nothing much would happen anytime soon. Not because of Russia's [largely empty] threats but because the Moldovan president has more pressing issues at hand than Transnistria. More pressing as in getting re-elected and making sure his communist party doesn't lose the power like it lost the local elections in Moldova's capital last year.

Besides time works in favor of the Moldovans. Transnistria is a hell hole. Unemployment reached 50%. Ukraine had sealed the borders with Transnistria and has appointed joint Moldovan-Ukrainian customs officers checking all what goes in and out of the province through the Ukrainian checkpoints. That drastically reduced all the illegal arms traffic the economy of Transnistria was based on, which explains the rampant unemployment there.

In case of a highly unlikely conflict in Transnistria Russia won't be able to pull another South Ossetia stunt for the simple reason there's no way to teleport reinforcements into the breakaway province. But as I've said that's not going to happen anyway because all the Moldovans need to do is wait patiently till the separatist government is overthrown by the local population. Or until all the local population leaves the province.
