    Default About the 4870x2

A lot of people say that the latest ATI card is better than the GTX280 but it has some driver problems like playing Oblivion and Crysis on really low frames. but if you download the latest drivers will the problems go away? Is it worth getting it although it has some risks? or should I get it and download the driver update?
btw is 3gb of ram better than 3gb for gaming? A friend of mine said that 3gb is unstable for gaming.

Every new card has trouble with drivers, but later the problems are resolved with newer and newer drivers... At least this is how I see it :/

By 3GB for gaming do you mean VRAM? If so, maybe, depending on what OS you're using. On a 32-bit system you proberably wont be able to access enough RAM when using 3GB VRAM - only about 512MB if the system even can detect it then. On 64-bit it wouldn't be a problem.

Memory. I meant to post if the 3g of ram is better than the 2gb for gaming. Its a Kingstone. Don't know if that helps.

It shouldn't play a difference if you had 2 gigs or 3 gigs of RAM... But if you ever go to a 64-bit system, then get 4 gigs

The 4870X2 has the same problems as it has two graphics cores, a lot of games are not optimised for dual graphics cores and therefore it suffers the same problems as any other Crossfire/SLI solution if the game isnt optimised for Crossfire it will run slightly slower than the GTX280, but if it has full support (COD4, WIC etc) it will be nearly twice as fast as the GTX280

i own the single core 4870 and its really fast, for 9/10 games you wont need the extra speed unless you have a huge monitor like 30" or something

Hopefully this will help you for more info check out these reviews

I plan on playing on my 32 inch but I am getting a single ATI card. Will it have problems with old games such RTW and Oblivion?

Not necessarily. If I remember correctly, theres no 3GB stick of ram, so that leaves room for mixing 2 ram sticks together... well if there is a 3GB ram stick I never heard of it. Having 2 different types of ram may effect performance. For example; 2GB stick at 800Mhz and 1GB sick at 677MHz may result in the system being unstable, or just slower.

the one I getting is a Kingstone (2GB + 1 GB) will it be unstable?

Is it a bundle? If so its fine. I think it would automatically go at the slower speed. I'd recommend 3GB. Read this. I have 4GB but thats because it was 2GB or 4GB for me when I bought my laptop. The most a single program on 32 bit OS can use is 2GB but then its handy to have the extra bit for background programs behind a game.

so it would be better if I just get a 2? will the game performance be better if it was 3?

800 & 667 wouldn't work together at all, I tried it once, got constant reboots every 10 minutes... This might depend on the motherboard brand.

But you got a point about mixing 2 gigs with 1 gigs sticks, I guess it is logical for it to work better on 1+1, or 2+2 setups.

@ The_Dark_Legion -> Experiment. Leave 3 gigs, go play smth or benchmark a little, then shut your PC down, remove the 1 GB stick, and then go play smth or benchmark some more and see the results...

It shouldn't, but if it will... You know what must be done

I'm just playing you, you won't have any problems. Hopefully

Personally I'd get 3GB but make sure they are the same speed. If you send us some links to the sticks you're thinking of getting we can vet them.
