Default why dont generals / captains use shields in battle?

seriously...that seems sort of odd. i know they are still tough units, but come on...not having a shield seems kinda suicidal (unless your a gotland footmen...zweihander...etc...) especially for captains who are attached to infantry / archer units..

and if there are any small mods that give commanders shields along with whatever else the mod offers...can you tell me? (this whol shield thing is a minor pet peeve of mine...) thanks

you mean like when they kill calvary with their arm when attached to spearmen?

They don`t use shields because they`re a way too cool to use them.

Far too busy sitting on the unprotected flank of the unit, in my opinion.

Captains often look odd, they're usually wearing armour that's way in advance of the time period at the beginning of the game, archer captains are just standing there holding a knife while everybody else is shooting etc.

they are strong enough without them, but a shield animation would help.

Leave it to the modder to perfect the works of the paid developers for no profit at all.

well IMO they look pretty rediculous without them. having a shield would at least make them look....not so out of place / vulnerable.

and considering what was said above....they really do look out of place. one man in full plate armor while everyone else is wearing light mail or worse...

It does make sense to a degree that captains had better protection than the rest of the men, being the leader and all...

in SS, Lithuanian generals have shields.
"WE WILL SMITE THE INVADERS FROM OUR SKIES! Though they sweep over our lands like the sands of winter, never again will we bow before them; never again endure their oppression; never again endure their tyranny. We will strike without warning and without mercy, fighting as one hand, one heart, one soul. We will shatter their dreams and haunt their nightmares, drenching our ancestors' graves with their blood. And as our last breath tears at their lungs; as we rise again from the ruins of our cities...they will know: Helghan belongs to the Helghast." -Scholar Visari

Its cuz their bad ass, just too awesome to use them
ain't no biggie when they die

seriously, the captains have exactly the same defense stats of the unit they're with, cept two hitpoints, and their attack is one hit kill. But just for aesthetic use, it would be cool

I think that their lack of shields symbolfied that they don't really expect to engage in a prolonged fight were they would need them or they forgot to pick one up and every battle they regret it constantly.

Yeah, but Conan used his other hand to throw enemies and use another sword. The captains are just guys in fake plate armor with only one working arm.
