Default Cool reception for Cheney in Azerbaijan

American Vice President Dick Cheney’s visit to the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, appears to be have been unsuccessful for Washington, unlike his visit to Tbilisi.

Cheney received a cool welcome and, according to Russia's Kommersant newspaper, Azerbaijan’s President Ilkham Aliyev has implied that Baku is going to play a waiting game concerning the Nabucco gas pipeline, which is set to bypass Russia.

Neither President Ilkham Aliyev nor the Prime Minister, Artur Rasizade, were there to greet Cheney at Baku airport. Instead, he was met by the country’s First Deputy PM and the Foreign Minister.

The Kommersant newspaper reports that Cheney was very annoyed by the results of the meeting with President Aliyev and even refused to attend a ceremonial supper in his own honour.

Aleksandr Pikaev, an analyst from the Institute for World Economy and International Relations, believes Dick Cheney is hardly the right man for diplomacy in the region.

„The Americans didn’t find anything else to support their failed ally Saakashvili other than sending to the region Mr Cheney who is incredibly unpopular in the world, who is associated with the war in Iraq, with all this conservative black-and-white vision of the world, who was accused of corruption – remember the Halliburton affair in Iraq. If the Bush Administration really wanted to consolidate the international community behind the U.S. in criticising Russia, I think they should have found somebody else, not Mr Cheney,” Pikaev said.

PS. Kommersant is Russian pro western media

Ouch! I hope Mr. Pikaev doesn't get a shotgun blast to the face.

It is customary for dignataries to be met at the airport by their counterparts, and it sounds like he was. Don't really see the snub in that.

I am curious why if was going to be disliked as the US emmisary, the embassy wouldn't have known that and relayed it before the fact?

Not Cheney's style anymore. He's more direct now and just shoots you in the face if he doesn't like you.

Cheney is just not important now as he once was, in about 4-5 months he is out. And that's why he desn't get same sort of treatment any more.

Azerbaijan makes russia look good in virtually every way if we want to judge by western standards, so don't you worry. Let's not even go into Nakhichevan...

That said, Azerbaijan is courting the idea of Islamic Fundamentalism as it's rather distrustful of all things western or, well, Russian. As for the russians, it probably stems from their brainwashing that everything bad that has ever happened to the nation of azerbaijan is the fault of "the russians and armenians".

The First Deputy PM and Foreign Minister?

That's like America sending their VP, instead of their president.

    Oh....wait...

It's proof that Cheney actually is unofficially the president; he just forgot about his figurehead Bush.

Maybe Azeris confused about being an ally of USA and standing up againts to Russia. Just seeing what being an USA ally brought to Georgia, and how USA protects Georgia. Maybe they do not want to anger the Bear!

Russia and Azerbaijan will always have special relationship. They just have too much history together, and Azeri leadership is in Soviet/Russian mold. Current president's father was loyal NKVD/KGB operative for many years and Soviet loyalist through and through.

Sorry, but current situation has absolutely nothing to do with "special relations" or something like this, just business. Relations between Azerbaijan and Russia were very strained during 90-ies (especially because Russia somewhat supported Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh conflict), and didn't really improve much after Ilham Aliyev succeeded Heydar Aliyev. But Russia has proven to be A LOT better partner in gas transit services compared to any alternatives West could offer so far. It's not choice of freedom with West and slavery with Russia, it's rather more money with Russia and less with West. Azerbaijan chose more money (surprising isn’t it?).
