Default Timeline of the Russo-Georgia War

I feel many people do not know much about the background or events that lead up this conflict and this has caused many hateful posts and bad debates. I want to create this mostly as a tool for information, even though I support Georgia I will not be biased or at least try not to be.

July 31 (some claim August 1): Two roadside bombs made of 122mm artillery shells hit the Georgian village of Eredvi, injuring 6 policemen.

August 1: Heavy fighting between South Ossetian irregulars and Georgian troops occured. Georgia claims South Ossetia artillery attacked some Georgian villages, South Ossetia denied. A South Ossetian reported a soldier was killed by sniper fire.

August 2: South Ossetians started going in buses to evacuate to Russia.

August 5: Russian ambassador warned Russia would intervene if conflict would rise up, small skirmishes continued.

August 7: Georgian president ordered all Georgian troops to ceasefire, however conflict worsened between both sides. Hours later, the Georgian president claimed Georgia would "restore constitutional order" to South Ossetia. Russia tanks were reported to be moving into South Ossetia about the same time (some say earlier).

August 8: Georgia launches a military offensive to capture the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali. The Russian military reports some of their peacekeepers were killed. Georgian rocket attacks and artillery attacks destroyed some parts of the South Ossetian capital, Russia claims this is genocide. Russia claimed up to 2,000 were dead after the artillery attacks. Russia calls for a UN meeting, but to no avail.
Georgia captures 8 South Ossetian villages and surrounds the capital. Including, one Georgian television station said Georgia controlled the capital, however the government did not comment.
Russian troops are comfirmed to be in South Ossetia.

August 9: A naval battle in the Black Sea causes a Georgian missile boat to be destroyed, the battle took place between Georgia and Russia off Abkhazia.
Abkhazia opened a second front in the Kodori Valley against Georgia, Russia was first claimed then comfirmed to be operating air strikes against Georgia troops there.

August 11: During the night, Russian paratroopers and naval units landed in Abkhazia and started raiding Georgian border villages. Russian troops entered the Georgian city of Senaki, destroyed the military base and some strategic units.
Gori was shelled and bombed by Russia, most civilians started fleeing the conflict zone.
Russians occupy a key highway near Gori that cuts Georgia in half.
A Jamestown Foundation affiliated Russian military analyst Pavel Felgenhauer speculated that "Russia's invasion of Georgia had been planned in advance, with the final political decision to complete the preparations and start war in August apparently having been made back in April."

August 12: Medvedev, Russian president, ordered the ceasefire for all Russian troops and approved the six point ceasfire plan proposed by France.
Russian forces entered the Georgian port of Poti.

August 13: All Georgian civilians and soldiers leave the Kordori Valley, a Abkhazian general said "they received American training in running away".
Russian tanks entered Gori and took up positions aroun the city.
Russian troops also continued on a road to Tblisi, but turned off to the north, taking up camp. Those soldiers are still currently there.

August 14: Russia agrees to let Georgian police co-work with Russian soldiers in enforcing order, as many robbers take advantage of nobody being in their houses.

August 15: Reuters said Russian more Russian soldier took up camp around 30 miles from the Georgian capital.

August 17: Russian troops occupy Poti, as well as military bases in Senaki and Gori. BBC reports less Russian troops are in Gori, but reporters said they were still occupying key points in the city.

August 19: Russian soldier took 21 Georgian troops prisoner. Russian tanks leave Poti but go in the opposite direction of the port.

August 22: Russian main troops leave Poti and Gori but they keep soldiers in certain parts of both cities, they claim them as checkpoints.

August 23: All Russian troops leave Georgia proper however check points move closer to the Georgian capital, in Poti and more in Gori.
Russia then claims that it will keep troops in Georgia to establish a buffer zone.

August 24: With Russian troops in Poti, a US ship carrying supplies arrives.

August 25: Abkhazia claims 8000 Georgian troops were massing around the border, Russia and Georgia both deny this.

August 26: Russia recognizes the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

August 28: The United Nations Security Council held a meeting to hear briefings about the humanitarian implications of the conflict, and for both sides to state their positions on the issue. When the US ambassador questioned the disregardance of earlier Security Council resolutions about territorial integrity, the threat and use of force, and the redrawing of territorial borders, the Russian ambassador asked where were the weapons of mass destruction, what about the threats to wipe Iran off the face of the earth, and what happened to your territorial principles when Kosovo declared independence

The situation stays the same today, Russian checkpoints remain in Georgia, so in total, a few hundred of soldiers.
This info is mainly from Wikipedia, which uses Georgian, Russian and Neutral source.

Countries that recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia:

    Russia
Belarus (not officially, stated they would later)
    Nicaragua

The events around August 8th are still very murky and there is a huge discrepancy between Georgian & Russian/S. Ossetian accounts.

Hours later, the Georgian president claimed Georgia would "restore constitutional order"
You should double check that these were the presidents words, I think they were a Georgian Generals.

    Yep

Brigadier General Mamuka Kurashvili, the chief of Georgian peacekeepers in South Ossetia, went on Georgian television to say Georgia's "power-wielding bodies" had "decided to
restore constitutional order" in the breakaway region.

attila, first of all, do we really need another thread on this conflict?
seconds, if you are going to create a timeline, please do not insert your own version of conflict (inserting highly questionable information), and try to stick to the blunt facts that are a common knowledge.

    Throw away all your newspapers!
Most of you are Libertarians, you just havent figured it out yet.
