    Default electoral college?

could someone tell me why do we need a 300 year old system designed for when 99% of the population is uneducated/illiterate?

could someone with good understanding of it explain how it works and why we need it in the 21st century? much appreciated, googling and finding the relevant info would take alot of time.

Or why election day has to be on the first Tuesday after the first Monday, or whatever it is, instead of on the weekend when people who work would be more able to vote?

The electoral college was part of the "Great Comprimise" which gave smaller states more power. Basically voting in the college is set up just like the congress; two Senators + Rep's = State electoral votes. So the miniumun number of electoral votes from a state is three, no matter how small their population.

Most States are winner take all. This is because porportioning out a handful of electoral votes was technically difficult. Now it is not technically difficult so both Maine and Nebraska do it. But The rest of the states do not because no red/blue state wants to break up its votes and gift a few electoral votes to the otherside.

I think a constitutional admendment should be passed forcing all states to porportion their electoral votes. It would make the system more sensible, but still maintain the "Great Comprimise". As it is now, a single persons vote in California could swing the electoral college 108 votes (270 are needed to win). In 2000, ~300 voters in Florida flipped the college 50 votes, which is silly.

this needs to be done asap. so like the 2000 election would not happen again. I also didn't like it when the supreme court came out and gave the presidency to bush. it really felt like they overstep their power boundries.

If there was no electoral system people would actually have to do what the population says instead the Presidential election becomes a glorified multi-governors election in which the aim is too appease certain swing states etc. instead of the USA.
