"Task from God"

Palin stated recently that the US war in Iraq is a "task that is from God". She told this to ministry students at her former church.

"Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," she said. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan."

I do believe it is okay to pray for their safety and wish them well but saying that "God willed the war" just seems like garbage to me. Why would God want America to go to war?

Palin told graduating students of the church's School of Ministry, "What I need to do is strike a deal with you guys." As they preached the love of Jesus throughout Alaska, she said, she'd work to implement God's will from the governor's office

"Implement God's will"? This seems too weird for me. This is just a ploy to get people to think she will do what God would do, I think it is crazy. What does God will? To invade Iran?


However, this guy says it right.

Rob Boston, a spokesman for Americans United for Separation of Church and State, lamented Palin's comments.
"I miss the days when pastors delivered sermons and politicians delivered political speeches," he said. "The United States is increasingly diverse religiously. The job of a president is to unify all those different people and bring them together around policy goals, not to act as a kind of national pastor and bring people to God."

When it comes to religion, isn't the answer obvious? Hell the OP answers this and it's what scares me every election cycle. People actually like to hear this kind of crap and vote in masses for people who believe it.

Invoking religion to justify war is the logical conclusion of an ideology that invokes it for for social issues, for example.

With Palin making comments like this I seriously hope she doesn't get into a position where she'd be President proper.

It reminds me of the scene in Kingdom of heaven where all the nobles are screaming "God wills it!". I don't like it when people claim to know exactly what God's (or any other deity for that matter) plan is. Al Quieda claim to be doing God's work so who is right? It's a vicous cycle that politics could do without.

I think it depends on which of those gods decides to end the earth. I don't think all gods have such a fearful end in store for us. For example, Venus would likely end it in a much more loving manner.
