    Default Is Singapore fascist?

What are your opinions on Singapore's political stance? It has a political party that has been in power for 40 years and it's oppositions get booted out almost every election.

Ahem. Please look up the definition of facism (Wikipedia is sufficient), get some information on Singapore (Wikipedia, same), and then think about it again...

I don't have to like the way Singapore is ruled, but it definitely not facism.

They aren't Fascist. Just diabolically difficult to dislodge from Government by all accounts.

Bordering on it, one thing I find quite Ironic is the ruling parties flag is eerily similar to the flag of Mosley's Union of Fascists.

Na, Singapore government is Socialist; that is what typical Socialism is.

Besides, people did vote the current government by will - no one force them to do that. The same party got voted and voted again because they do a good job, especially for economy.

And after looking after Singapore's neighbours it is not hard to image why that happen (pretty much all its neighbours are screwed up; even Malaysia is just a big racist country).

One-party state, ridiculous censure laws, oppressive police-state institutions.... Yep, pretty much a Fascist state.

Gum chewing is actually forbidden in Singapore, did you know that? If you are caught chewing gum you can end up serving up to 5 years in prison. This is not a joke.

Yeah I saw it on the discovery channel.

Sascha whilst one could make an argument for Russia. Cuba and North Korea are definitely communist with state ownership and such.

I did not mention Russia. All of the countries I mentioned have or had "one-party state, ridiculous censure laws, oppressive police-state institutions", which were given by Lord Consul as criteria for the identification of facism. Either these criteria are not sufficient to identify facism, then Singapore cannot be called facists either on these grounds, or facism is identical with communism.

Anyway, this thread is dominated by people who don't what facism is, (apparently to them it is just a buzzword meaning "evil government") and who also seem to get their information on foreign countries from hearsay and discovery channel.

And you couldn't have anal sex legally in many American states until fairly recently. All countries have stupid or draconian laws.

The 5 years in prison is a lie, by the way.

So? It's no different to paan or alcohol: it doesn't pose any serious risk, but since people can't be trusted to use it responsibly there's no reason to have it. It's not like deprivation of chewing gum is against human rights, just have mentos. Chewing gum really is utterly pointless, I wish they'd ban it here.
A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

    Are you serious?

While gum might be annoying, it certainly doesn't pose serious risks to the people who consume it or others. Unlike alcohol.

The reason why gum is banned is because there were cases that people used it to paralyze public transport system in the past.

Yes it is. The state should get rid of criminals who spit chewing gum on streets or cannot control themselves with alcohol, rather than to ban these things from innocent people.

I wouldn't call them fascist as they are not a society based on a warlike nature. They ARE Orwellian however in their own way.

They really are their own category of government. Its basically like a country run by Chinese businessmen with very strict corporate rules, but since they are the law they can use whatever punishment they can think of at a whim.
Swear filters are for sites run by immature children.
