    Default another pope question

sacking and exterminating both have negative effects on your rep and relations with the pope correct? does this only apply to christian regions though, or everyone? im scotland right now and im trying to not to sack or exterminate because my favor keeps dropping even though im bashing the excommunicated french faction. im always trying to give gifts to the papal and their allys so do you think this tactic will work?

It's not the fact that your exterminating the french, its the fact that your attacking them. Prolonged assaults on christian factions will result in excommunication; unless their EXcom'd their self.

The Papal States function like any other country, and they don't particularly like a country comitting genocide under any circumstance. This will certainly help drop your relations with the papacy. What I recommend is stop exterminating, sacking is not great but it can easily be argued that the rewards are too high not to. However, if you are making a lot of money either stop sacking or go on a diplomatic blitz with the papacy- give them gifts from money to maps to even useless land if you feel necessary. Also, build churches and chapels to the max, this pleases him and will help you out.

well after the french and danes started attacking me and i stopped (and did papal missions) they both ended up being ecommunicated and i even got a message saying that the papals didnt care how many i killed. so i took 3 quarters of their territorys while giving the papals gifts and end up still having decreasing favor.

The pope doesn't like you because you're supposed to love your enemies as you love yourself. Peace needs to reign all throught MTW2

Honestly I wish I knew your answer.

Make sure you got plenty of priests roaming around your countryside preaching the word of God and humiliating Heretics. I've noticed you can score some favor points by keeping your Christain percentage above 70%. Which is pretty easy to do until you start taking Islamic land and excommunicated lands, since their religious values are low. Send priests to Islamic lands to build up thier piety very quickly, they tend to earn better traits when they are on pilgrimmages.

Secondly, make sure your generals have some decent piety ratings. I guess a religious nut makes a war justified in the popes eyes ! I've noticed my favor dwindle when my generals are tried before the inquisition!!

Third, join every single crusade, if you can afford it. You don't techinically need to capture the city, as long as you sort of try. Asking the Pope to declare a crusade that he rejects will cause you favor to fall a bit.

Typically, I try to get as many of my priests to become Cardinals so when things get hairy and I want to start expanding rapidly, I just assassinate the pope and put mine in there. Instant favorite.

Gosh, all I can do is that all that is good that I don't have this problem with the Patriach when I play as Byzantium...

I honestly am fresh out of suggestions. I mean, the only three other things I can think of is 1. You are allied with someone the pope hates, loathes and despises, 2. you have a high level of heresy or at least a low level of Catholicism in your terris, 3. you have a bunch of heretics/witches in your territory or you have a mega heretic/witch. However, i don't know if that will affect relations at all.

Money is the fastest and most easy way to get good relations with the Pope. To get from the brink of excomm. to a "perfect" relationsship, will cost you about 10.000 fl. in one turn.

I use it when I want to put a crusade on a muslim or excomm. faction that is my enemy, - works every time.

No matter what you do it will deterioate over time, so only boost it with money when you need a favor from the Pope.

    Cheers,

After all, the french people are not responsible of their leaders decissions. So, exterminating the catholic population won't please the pope anyway. Kill their armies and generals, they are the true enemies of the church.

If you sack or exterminate a catholic city you will probably damage a church in that city, which is according to the pope not a pleasant thing to do. Also slaughtering catholics is not very Christian. This is why your relation with the pope suffers. You can of course gift him some money, let him share in the loot and hiss holiness will forget and forgive your sins .
