    Default Bill Maher's Religulous

    http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/religulous/

Religulous is a documentary directed by Larry Charles and starring American political comedian Bill Maher, host of Real Time With Bill Maher on HBO. According to Maher, the title of the film is a portmanteau derived from the words "religion" and "ridiculous," implying the satirical nature of the documentary that is meant to mock the concept of organized religion and the problems it brings about.

Known for his stance against religion, Bill Maher's views on the various world religions are explored as he travels to numerous religious destinations, such as Jerusalem, the Vatican, and Salt Lake City, interviewing believers from a variety of backgrounds and groups, including Jews for Jesus, Muslims, polygamists, Satanists, Hasidic scholars and even Rael of the Raelian Movement. In the trailer and documentary Maher also interviews research neuroscientist Andrew Newberg, MD, (author of Why We Believe What We Believe) who brain-scans people at the University of Pennyslvania as they pray, meditate and speak in tongues. The documentary was produced by Thousand Words and is being distributed by Lionsgate. Originally slated for intentional release date coinciding with the religious Easter holiday 2008, post-production delays resulting from a screenwriters guild strike pushed the release date back to July 11, 2008. Release has now been pushed back to October 3, 2008.
I don't agree with Maher's stance on religion but this should be interesting.

As an open minded person Im looking forward to this movie too.

Inspired by Bill Maher I too am wondering why people think that believing the existence of Santa Clause who have flying deers and can distribute gifts all over the world by himself is ridiculous but believing in a talking snake or a man can part the sea is not?

Because the latter things are part of this concept known as "religion", which is deeply ingrained into our societies (of course, increasingly less so every decade).

I like the word, there are some things that are better described as religulous than ridiculous. It's a word that can be used everytime someone claims the Bible, or the Qur'an is compatible with modern science. Or when someone only believes something because God says so, and has no other reason, that should be religulous.

I would have preferred this movie had been made by someone more open minded than Bill Maher. Him making a movie like this makes the movie as believable as Fred Phelps making a movie about homosexuality.

I'll see it because I think Bill Maher's funny but TBH the man follows Dawkins like the church of latter day saint's follows the book of mormon.

One's a sexually deviant drug-user and the other's Fred Phelps!

That is where I stand as well. He is as much of a fanatic as the fanatics he ridicules.

The difference is that he is able to think rationally, which is why this movie will be worth seeing.

Remember, though, that the point of this movie will be to generate laughs, not necessarily to spawn an army of insta-atheists.

Bill Maher is quite a reasonable person. He's agnostic, and simply puts more credit into Spinoza's god than any of these ridiculous ones that involve themselves in petty human affairs.

I don't like all his views, especially with religion where I differ most with him, but he's on the ball otherwise.

    I can't wait.

The only explanation would be that his jokes are mostly at the expense of people like you.

I'm not much for people whose only source of comedy is their political leanings.

I hate super right wing comedians like Dennis Miller and Colin Quinn too.

Mango seems to be pretty liberal and moderate to me - not the target of Maher.

I wouldn't say so, I'm an agnostic and I don't find him funny, he just isn't that great of a comedian, Dave Letterman type, too mechanical and predictable. Maybe it's his writers, but his stand-up is quite poor as well. I do like real time however, it's a fine show compared to the stuff on Fox or CNN.
