Nottingham is almost by default the first place you'll get offered the woodsmans guild, which you need to recruit them.
Any castle can get the woodsmans guild, offers an experience bonus to all archers trained there, and the ability to train sherwood archers. I've never actucally used them though, I prefer the uniformality that having retinue longbowmen provides. The green contrasts too much

the master woodsmen guild lets you create sherwood archers and gives all your archers an experience both at the castle and globally.
the headquarters does the same thing only just a little better.

in order to get one, 1)have at least a fortress level settlement 2) build archery ranges 3) spam archers at the fortress you want the guild in and disband them the next turn (so they return to the recruit pool for the following turn) 4) have a chivalrous governor, 4+ chivalry. you'll be offered the guild eventually.

Didn't happen with me, because I spam archers anyway, Nottinghams had a woodsmans guild since castle level. Without a high chivalry governor to boot.

As for use, I dunno, probably more for ambush armies due to their hiding bonus. They can't deploy stakes and they both do less damage and have less armour then yeomen or retinue longbowmen.

I've never found much use for them. I've always felt that their lack of soldiers per unit is a big drawback. Would rather have a regular unit of longbowmen instead.

if you're doing the RR thing in the early period with 6 mos. per turn (like me) then it'll be something like 280 turns before you can get actual longbowmen.

so in that case the guild is useful to get some longbowmen quite a bit earlier.

in every other case i prefer my longbowmen to carry shields and wear mail armor too.

Oh dear. It's called masochism. :-)

I can imagine your face when you get them for the first time though.

Anyway, is there any historical rationale behind this unit? Isn't it just science-fiction?

That's what I've always thought too. Along with any other fantasy units: Battlefield Assassins come to mind...are mounted longbowmen still in the game? :hmmm:

I've never seen AI training any of those anyway. And when I use them, I despise myself...

I'd suggest it for 6.2/7.0 but I doubt it will ever come.

Maybe we should make a community 6.2 release when your mod and all those Quark is cooking are published... Along with RC/RR, BYG, new backstabbing Lusted's AI and some other smaller or bigger fixes that happen along the way?

New RR puts Noble Knights back into mounted longbowmen slot, to bridge the gap for french cavalry between CK and Lancers/Gendarmes. Sherwoods and Assassins would be no great loss, that's true.

Grand I somehow missed them in my French Campaign. At least the French were rumoured to have the best aristocratic cavalry. Except the well know "furor theutonicorum".

It can't all be a lie. I saw that oak Robin was hiding on!

Let's add it as a special building for Notthingham.

I kinda like them, as they offer the game a good unit, like the huscarls and viking raiders.

however if you want to change them why not change them for "unique knights" such as knights of wales england or even york, cornwall?
