    Default When does America appear?

Hi, I was just using toggle_fow on my Sicily campaign to check out the map, barely 4 or 5 turns from the start, and as I moved to the west I noticed that the Aztecs were visible on the coast of America that normally appears towards the end of the game. Is it normal for that to be there, simply hiding in the FOW? I thought it appeared completely new. :hmmm:

    Thanks,

It's there, but you can't acess it without both Caravels and the message saying the world is round appearing. I think.
I thought about writing something clever, but then I remembered I'm not clever enough.

Off topic, it always annoys me when games/movies/general media refer the discovery of America by Columbus as proof the world was not 'flat' - because frankly scientists did not think this at the time. The Egyptians had long ago calculated the circumference of the world and although i am not certain on specific nations, with the renaissance of classical works all Medieval kingdoms would have learnt at least this basic fact before Columbus's time. This is a myth perpetrated by a couple of textbook writers in the 19th century, one that caught on.

What actually happened when Columbus went before the Council of scientists is that these people claimed his calculations on the circumference of the world was wrong, and that the far east was much further away than he asserted - of course, they were right - but America lay in between

It seems to me that you should be able to play a faction and discover North America as Leif Erickson? Or is this back in Barbarians Expansion for RTW time period?

But surely, not everyone believed the world was round. Even today, scientists disagree with each other on all sort of things. Maybe some of them believed - but others would have resented the very idea the world was round. Then there were all the commoners and regular people who had no idea that these scientists had said the world was round. In 1100 you didn't exactly have a CNN news special reporting on the fact that some scientist had said the world wasn't flat.

But I basically agree with you , especially when there are rumours that a Viking got blown off course on his way to Greenland and discovered America by accident. (Eric the Red and Leif Ericsson?)

But this is off topic, this thread can be closed if some mod wants to.

Even commoners should have known better. This source gives a good account.
