UCLA accused of illegal admissions practices.

Well, seems like my university has been accused of factoring race into the students' admissions process.

But to be honest, is anyone REALLY surprised? We all know colleges around America do this, whether they publicly deny it or not.

Prompted by campus and community concerns about the lack of student diversity, UCLA decided in 2006 to move to a "holistic" application process, in which applicants' grades, test scores, extracurricular activities and other factors were no longer reviewed separately. Rather, achievements could be considered in the context of their personal experiences, Lifka said.

That's standard, if the Black kids situations are worse due to gangs and bad neighbourhoods then its a matter of demographics not race. Its just a coincidence that they are black, i bet they'd do the same thing if it was disadvantaged white.

You guys are lucky - at least your universities do it unofficially. Most Brazilian Universities officially institute "black quotas" for their admission process.

The PC crowd will surely demand something similar soon, to give our new citizens a "fair chance"

didn't you read the time's report on usa ivy league universities? only 1/3 of the students who got in deserve to be there. about 1/3 got in because of connections. the other 1/3 gets in because >>> they need diversity <<< this is not news.

Well -- how many kids in school feel they are simply buying the paper? If daddy drops a bundle in gifts to get a dumb one accepted -- that is how the game is played. Does not mean that someone was kept out. Daddy overpaid and is actually subsidizing others.

Diversity is sometimes an overused excuse. Nearly everyone will attend some training somewhere after completing high school -- even if it is truck mechanics or beauty school. What schools are really wanting is to ensure that they are responding to the political demands of the elites. They cannot continue to pay and recruit talent when under a cloud of investigations. And some administrators really do think this is the right way to run their institution. So what?

And yeah -- this is not news.

This is why Affirmative Action needs to be stopped. At the very least, make race a non-issue, and only count monetary funds as eligibility.

Prop 209 made affirmative action illegal in CA. The operative text:

(a) The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.

This is why Affirmative Action needs to be stopped. At the very least, make race a non-issue, and only count monetary funds as eligibility.

It wont be stopped. Its here and its here to stay for a long time to come and nobody, ESPECIALLY not us, can stop it. The entire thought process of minority relations needs to be COMPLETELY changed and in the minds of the minorities and those who run our government/society this is an impossibility. We will be lucky if this changes in our lifetime. I guess you can think of it as our "punishment", now we suffer for the mistakes of the past. Hopefully the current generation has learned from this so that we dont create circumstances for vengeful behavior and laws to be created.

See, is the west coast REALLY that bad? We dont have anything like that in the midwest, the so-called "heartland". I think the people who bash that region would get along there far better than they would think.

Firstly, California is a nice place to live.

And though I agree about the need of diversity at school but I think admission should remain purely based on academic performance.
