Default What is your vision of E.U?

What is your vision of E.U and your hope in the next years?

For me a semi-federal Union with a common foreign policy, an EU army, a EU president, the preservation of the different cultures, languages and the continuation of a competition between the differents EU nations.

It might end up as a semi-federal Union after a few decades or another world war.

Well... I am an American...so you can take my opinion for what its worth

it is my opinion that the EU should exist as an body that allows open trade (and travel) between its members.... and could in effect also be percieved as a "non-aggression" pact between its members (i.e. any nation entering the E.U agrees not to attack any other member0

However. I dont think that it should infringe upon the sovereignty of any member nation (even if it is as minor as a change in national currency)...So all legislative, executive and judicial actions remain autonomous and within each member country...

this is just my opinion...but what do I know....Im just a gun toting USA isolationalist/imperialist :usflag:

I believe it should be a trading alliance+military alliance were the members have more sovereign than they have now, I.E less laws made in Brussels more laws made in Stockholm, Berlin, London, Madrid and every other capital.

    Laws by themselfs, for themselfs

Well hasnt the Lisbon treaty been effectively been made void by the referendum in Ireland? According to the rules of the EU the Lisbon treaty cannot go ahead if one member was to veto it. This ability to veto is why the EU cannot become federal or even semi federal. And I would like to see countries agree to vote for an amendment to take away the power to veto.

No, they are just going to have to reform it, think of it like the second reading of a bill. They are going to have to reform it to suit Ireland, then another vote can take place etc.

You do understand Danish passports are a internal, not a foreign policy issue?

Precisely, the "new nations" of the EU seem determined to drag us into their anti Russian coalition.

As a Brit, like most western Europeans, I don't have anything to fear from Russia. Most people in the UK thought Georgia was just a state in the US before the latest conflict. Why should we be dragged into conflict over some back of beyond poxhole, that does'nt concern us.
So Georgia is not of Importance to us, and the Russians are free to concquer it?

What about a NATO (and EU) country like Litunia, should we help them if they are attacked by russia or should we just ignore NATO Treaty if that happens?

By the way someone talking about the small countries and Switzerland
just take a look what the US is courently doing to Switzerland Banking System
(USB Bank) so small countries can be and are bullied by bigger ones.

A weakened state with hardly any co-operation that turns in on itself in the near future, and leads to a civil war across Europe.

Other. The EU will fall apart, as its member states gradually collapse from demographic decline and an unsustainable welfare state.

uiii, and then you'll be all alone against all those nasty russians, chinese, islamist etc. but i bet you already feel that way, don't you?

I hope for a slow but steady development up to a USE - but without a President. I prefer an executive that is controlled more by the parliament and has less freedom to "*ç% up everything.

oh, btw, which unsustainable welfare state do you mean? the swedish? or the danish? last time i heard, they were doing well. the others are busy restructuring but not callapsing.

That isn't the way I want things to be, but it's the direction I think things are going. And yes, Europe has already practically left us alone against the rest of the world. With the exception of Britain, no European country has contributed significantly to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. And what has Europe done to join the USA in sticking up for Georgia? Not that I've been too impressed with American behavior in that situation either, but if it comes to the worst, we won't be able to fight Russia with no help from Europe.

I tend to align more with Ireland, which has been doing its best to resist the EU's efforts to centralize its government and take more power away from individual European nations. If I were, say, French or German, I would want the EU to be reduced to little more than an economic and military alliance, with no aspirations whatever to nationhood.

The welfare state does work, for the short term. But long term, they are unsustainable. For instance, European birth rates are plummeting, and without children to pay for their parents' government benefits, the European welfare systems will probably collapse within a few decades. But I agree that for the present, things do look pretty good. Except that, for example, my great-uncle in Denmark had a nightmare of a time trying to get treatment for his heart disease, even though Danish health care is supposedly "free" and "universal".
