i am just about done setting up map_ground_types, map_climates and map_regions. but still i would like some feedback and perhaps some assistance.
the initial idea:
simply put, i aim to merge the teutonic and the crusades campaigns and hopefully ad a little more flavor to it.
the map is huge, 495 by 506 pixels. it ends in the west around Marseille and stretches eastwards almost as far as the grand campaign. it ends in the north about the polar circle and stretches a little further south than the grand campaign. this puts constantinople in the center of the world.
the timurids and mongols may be replaced with rebels (to make room for more islamic and orthodox factions).
starting date:
probably 1110 after sidon was sacked by king baldwin of jerusalem and king sigurd of norway in the first crusade.
status:
loadable strat map with basic factions.
map_heights suppose i am roughly done with this for now.
map_ground_types are probably half way there, some parts are put some effort in to others are more off a hack.
map_climates are just an initial hack.
map_regions about 4/5. not much effort put into correct borders as off now.
map_roughness a duplicate of map_heights, without the blue.
map_features nothing much, a few rivers. but this i will put some effort into. sailable rivers from baltic sea to black sea would be great but probably not applicable.
water_surface øh... what...?
map_trade_routes ditto

the further concept:
the main aim is to focus on the religious tension of that period and specially the sacking of constantinople.
the scandinavian factions will have the opportunity (or the misfortune) to convert to orthodox. the family members of these factions will have the possibility to do service in the guard (sent off map and re-spawned if constantinople are besiged, respawned in constantionople that is). this will give the character a boost in experience and several battle beneficial traits, and some units of hardened varangian guardsmen. also it will eventually enable the construction of a varangian guild and thus the recruitment of varangian guardsmen.
unfortunatly this will also result in a shift towards byzantium and orthodox christianity. and off course religious unrest may follow and conversion may be necessary.
the winning conditions will be geared towards regional hegemony, rather than world domination.
the unification of scandinavia will give several benefits. so will the unification of italy and russia and some thing of the sorts towards establishing the ottoman empire. i therefore hope to set up several kalmar-union like events.
the map is rather large, so there will be room for minor settlements and regional centers. so i am thinking about adding some minor nobles, posibly unmounted generals, mainly to act as governors in such regional centers if they are not occupied by a family member. i suppose there should be some titles connected to the governorship of these regional centers, constituting an earldom or a duchy.
grand factions:
the winning conditions will be geared towards regional hegemony, rather than world domination. as of now i have reserved four faction slots to be used as a "grand factions" when a faction has conquered its region.
kalmar union - norway, sweden and denmark
kingdom of italy? - genoa, venice, sicily (milano, if they will be in the game). the papal states will launch an aggressive crusade against any italian faction that is excommunicated. they will be at the head of such a crusade them selves, to annex the excommunicated factions italian provinces. probably helped by a spawned army.
great russia? - novgorod, principality of vladimir-suzdal (russia) and principality of galicia-volhynia
ottoman empire? - sultanate of rûm (turks), ayyubid dynasty (egypt) and abbasid caliphate?
military orders:
i am toying with the idea of incorporating several militayry orders like order of the hospital of st. john, knights templar, the hospitaler knights of st lazarus and the hospitalers of st. sampson of constantinople. perhaps even removing the teutonic order as faction and make it an extensive military order available to hre.
in connection with that i plan to use the ability for factions to have different kinds of generals (like the crusading nobles from teutonic and crusades camapaigns). the thought is that by building a order headquarters one will have the chance for one (two) generals to become elected leader or second in command of said order. a general with such a status would enable the faction to recruit the full range of the orders units in any settlement (that has the appropriate buildings off course).
i also thinking about introducing leprosy as an event, and an attractable disease. this mostly due to the admitted leper knights of st. lazarus. the scenario i thought could be something like this: general nit-wit is on crusade in the holy land and by chance he attracts leprosy and will die within a given amount of turns. this will enable the faction to build the hospitalers of st. lazarus chapter house and recruit some few units in low numbers.
