i am just about done setting up map_ground_types, map_climates and map_regions. but still i would like some feedback and perhaps some assistance.

    the initial idea:
simply put, i aim to merge the teutonic and the crusades campaigns and hopefully ad a little more flavor to it.
the map is huge, 495 by 506 pixels. it ends in the west around Marseille and stretches eastwards almost as far as the grand campaign. it ends in the north about the polar circle and stretches a little further south than the grand campaign. this puts constantinople in the center of the world.
the timurids and mongols may be replaced with rebels (to make room for more islamic and orthodox factions).

    starting date:
probably 1110 after sidon was sacked by king baldwin of jerusalem and king sigurd of norway in the first crusade.

    status:
loadable strat map with basic factions.
map_heights suppose i am roughly done with this for now.
map_ground_types are probably half way there, some parts are put some effort in to others are more off a hack.
map_climates are just an initial hack.
map_regions about 4/5. not much effort put into correct borders as off now.
map_roughness a duplicate of map_heights, without the blue.
map_features nothing much, a few rivers. but this i will put some effort into. sailable rivers from baltic sea to black sea would be great but probably not applicable.
    water_surface øh... what...?
    map_trade_routes ditto

    factions:
    1 norway (catholic/orthodox)
    2 sweden (catholic/orthodox)
    3 denmark (catholic)
    4 hre (catholic)
    5 poland (catholic)
    6 tetonic
    7 lithuania (catholic/orthodox/pagan)
    8 novgorod (orthodox)
9 principality of vladimir-suzdal (russia) (orthodox)
    10 byzantium (orthodox)
    11 papal (catholic)
    12 venice (catholic)
    13 Republic of Genoa (milano?)
    14 sicily (catholic)
    15 hungary (catholic)
16 sultanate of rûm (turks) (muslim)
    17 ayyubid dynasty (egypt) (muslim)
    18 jerusalem (catholic)
    19 antioch (catholic)
    20 bulgaria (catholic/orthodox)
    21 mongols
    22 serbia (catholic/orthodox)
    23 principality of galicia-volhynia (orthodox)
    24 abbasid caliphate?
25 armenian kingdom of cilicia (orthodox)
    26 georgia? (orthodox)
    27 grand faction?
    28 grand faction?
    29 grand faction?
    30 grand faction?
    31 slave

    the further concept:
the main aim is to focus on the religious tension of that period and specially the sacking of constantinople.
the scandinavian factions will have the opportunity (or the misfortune) to convert to orthodox. the family members of these factions will have the possibility to do service in the guard (sent off map and re-spawned if constantinople are besiged, respawned in constantionople that is). this will give the character a boost in experience and several battle beneficial traits, and some units of hardened varangian guardsmen. also it will eventually enable the construction of a varangian guild and thus the recruitment of varangian guardsmen.
unfortunatly this will also result in a shift towards byzantium and orthodox christianity. and off course religious unrest may follow and conversion may be necessary.
the winning conditions will be geared towards regional hegemony, rather than world domination.
the unification of scandinavia will give several benefits. so will the unification of italy and russia and some thing of the sorts towards establishing the ottoman empire. i therefore hope to set up several kalmar-union like events.
the map is rather large, so there will be room for minor settlements and regional centers. so i am thinking about adding some minor nobles, posibly unmounted generals, mainly to act as governors in such regional centers if they are not occupied by a family member. i suppose there should be some titles connected to the governorship of these regional centers, constituting an earldom or a duchy.

    grand factions:
the winning conditions will be geared towards regional hegemony, rather than world domination. as of now i have reserved four faction slots to be used as a "grand factions" when a faction has conquered its region.
kalmar union - norway, sweden and denmark
kingdom of italy? - genoa, venice, sicily (milano, if they will be in the game). the papal states will launch an aggressive crusade against any italian faction that is excommunicated. they will be at the head of such a crusade them selves, to annex the excommunicated factions italian provinces. probably helped by a spawned army.
great russia? - novgorod, principality of vladimir-suzdal (russia) and principality of galicia-volhynia
ottoman empire? - sultanate of rûm (turks), ayyubid dynasty (egypt) and abbasid caliphate?

    military orders:
i am toying with the idea of incorporating several militayry orders like order of the hospital of st. john, knights templar, the hospitaler knights of st lazarus and the hospitalers of st. sampson of constantinople. perhaps even removing the teutonic order as faction and make it an extensive military order available to hre.
in connection with that i plan to use the ability for factions to have different kinds of generals (like the crusading nobles from teutonic and crusades camapaigns). the thought is that by building a order headquarters one will have the chance for one (two) generals to become elected leader or second in command of said order. a general with such a status would enable the faction to recruit the full range of the orders units in any settlement (that has the appropriate buildings off course).
i also thinking about introducing leprosy as an event, and an attractable disease. this mostly due to the admitted leper knights of st. lazarus. the scenario i thought could be something like this: general nit-wit is on crusade in the holy land and by chance he attracts leprosy and will die within a given amount of turns. this will enable the faction to build the hospitalers of st. lazarus chapter house and recruit some few units in low numbers.

it has crossed my mind, also been considering serbia (if it is within the time frame). but i suppose both are catholic factions and i would like to emphasize muslim and orthodox factions to balance the game.

Looks interesting! For extra factions I would suggest Serbia, Georgia, the Emirate of Damascus and dividing the Turks into the Sultanate of Rum and the Danishmenid Emirate.

Abbasid Caliphate, Sultanate of Rûm, Great Seljuks, Kiev and Cuman Khanate.

    Some suggestions for factions.

well, if you like, i would suggest you pick one of the factions marked with red and develop it as a standalone ad-on mod for either vanilla or teutonic, crusades campaigns.
then i could quite easily incorporate it into this mod, and also the community would benefit from an addition to the old worn out factions.

actually i would like to think of this project as rather open and low key and would particulary welcome contributions from people who are just learning how to mod.
when i have the a map somewhat more presentable, i will release it to the community for anyone to mess around with.

well, it is not actually a new unit, it is just gotland foormen(or was it varangian guard...?) made general bodyguard.
open export_descr_unit, find the entry for gotland footmen and ad general_unit to their attributes. also reduce the number of soldiers in the unit. and then ad the officers, i used the sami axemen, there can be 3 officers. if you use the sweden adon then notice that the sami axemen has been renamed markamen...

what i will do eventually is to upload the work i have done so far. mostly it is a basic mod folder with a half way finished map and vanilla/kingdoms factions included.
just need some time to gather all the necessary files for the mod to load.
if any one then would like to play around with the idea they are very welcome.

simply put you would have to copy the units entry in battle_models.modelsdb and rename it to what you like, then you would have to do the same in export_descr_units and lastly add the new unit to all buildings and upgrades in export_descr_buildings to make it recrutable.
you should read this tutorial as it covers all you need to know (and more).

ok. here are the files. make a copy of the teutonic campaign with sweden installed and rename it holly, then paste the holly war files into it. (you probably would not have to rename it, but this way you can use the .bat and .cfg files i supplied) there will probably be a bug with the map, so you should delete the base and campaign folder before you apply the holly war files. do not know why this is and did not take time to figure it out.
mind you, most of the provinces and settlements are drawn from teutonic, crusades and vanilla campaigns. they have been re-sized to fit the map, but the borders are probably not very correct.

also i uploaded what i did for the victual brothers/vitalienbruther. this was what i tested on when learning to mod and it is a total hack job and only half finished to booth. you should be able to make it woork along the sweden addon, but would have to do more to use them with holly war. they are based on the teutonic order, which is historically incorrect.

you are on your own with this, not much help i will give.
    happy moding.

    Mate, (we) Serbians are orthodox...but:

If you are starting your campaign in 1110, the state with name Serbia didn't existed...there were Rascia (ruled by Grand Prince Vukan) and Duklja (or Zeta, ruled by King Vladimir)...I think they were both catholics, because they bellonged to the house of Vojisavljevic, and the father of that house, prince Vojislav embraced catholic religion to please the pope for his help during the rebellion against the Byzantines in the mid XI century...later, Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja re-baptised himself into the orthodox church, and he annexed Duklja (or Zeta) to Rascia...in 1217 his son, Stefan II Nemanjic the First Crowned, become king and the state was called kingdom of Serbia...in 1345/6 Serbia become tsardom (or empire) and lasted 'till 1371 when it become principallity...in 1402 serbia become despotate and remained in that form till 1459, when it finally fell under Ottoman rule...and that was the end of medieval Serbian state...

Sorry if I was borring mate...
