Here's what Wallace did after emerging in my campaign:

Is there any way to code him the way so he doesn't abandon his army?

well lets hope it has some way to get that working![]()
It doesn't look so much like WW abandoned his army, but that they abandoned him. Perhaps a fine Scottish lass caught his eye, but the rest of his army wasn't willing to wait for him to make the score with her.

Depends on how you want to spawn him, the conditions are fairly general. You could for instance make it such that if you loose Edinburgh, in which case he could seige such to recover it.
To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.

I wonder, has anyone playing as Scotland let himself be beaten down to one province, just in order to get Wallace?
I very seriously doubt that.
Another argument is whether Wallace is really worth it. He has 9 command stars, fine. But he also has very low piety and wouldn't make a good governor. He also has all those "despises nobility" traits that make him not the most reliable choice to lead your main stack.
I'd rather have Bruce!

Heh, I bribed him then married him into the family. Then sent him on multiple crusades.
He is now completely bad-ass and...well, working for the English royal family.
The roleplaying explanation is simple, I offered him way more than the real English did to the point that he couldn't refuse. Then while he was away in Spain killing Moors, I conquered the rest of Scotland.
