    Default Video Memory Overload? and repeating texture lookup

    Alright, my campaign essentially loaded all the way to the end of the bar and waited a bit, then crashed. This means that the modifications to descr_character.txt and descr_strat_models.txt were at least working to a point, since before when those files were problems, it would crash much earlier and point to them directly or indirectly. After fixing up all of those errors, and finding a better way to handle the models_strat file, I am now getting this error:

    The actual error as you can see is at the bottom of the file. I find it curious though that it repeated the check for "eastern_ambassador_song.tga.dds" tons of times over. I do have that file, it certainly isn't missing, and I checked it letter for letter just now for any mis-spell. The entry in the model_strat file is also not problematic. The .CAS file isn't missing either, I directly copied the islamic ambassador .CAS file and renamed it, and made sure to copy an islamic ambassador faction texture and rename it as well, so that the UV Map lines up with the model, and they're all in the right place and properly referenced by the models_strat and further by the descr_character. So I can't see where that would be a problem.

    Same should go for all the rest of the files contained for my eastern faction.

    In the common crashes it says this:

    Loading game CTD, with Insufficient video memory error message
    Q: The game starts to load, then CTD and error log says there is 'Insufficient video memory'.

    A: This is normally caused when you tell M2TW to look for an image file that doesn't exist. The two files most likely to cause this error are the data\unit_models\battle_models.modeldb and descr_model_strat.txt. Check both to ensure that all the image paths (eg models_strat/textures/southern_ambasador_papacy.tga) lead to an image file (.tga or .texture) and the spelling is correct.
    But I've checked the file name already... All of the files are .tga.dds not just .tga but that seems to be the case for most mods I've looked at as well.

    Anyone have a clue the cause of this issue? It seems to still run all the campaign script trigger checks after receiving that error.

    I recently found there was a third cause of this type of crash (I though I updated the guide in 'Tools, Tutorials, and Resources' section but it seems I didn't ).

    This error can also be caused if the .cas file's .tga file is not assigned to one of the factions (it took me ages to figure this out). For example any entry using the 'late_general_northern.CAS' has to have one faction assigned the 'late_general_england_strat.tga' or the mod will crash.

    :hmmm: Do you mean there's a base .tga file for each of the existing .cas files? Such as, if I used 'late_general_northern.CAS' as my basis, I can't have a faction of france using 'late_general_france_strat.tga', one has to be using the england version? The wording isn't really ringing any bells, I'm terrible with the graphical side of things.

    Am I missing some sort of file association that connects the one to the other, because my understanding was as long as the texture UV Map fit the model there wasn't any further interaction.

    If you could elaborate on what you mean it would be appreciated .

    Is there any known problems with adding more than the normal 3 types of agents, besides the general/captain area?

    Yes there is a base .tga for each .cas file. However only one of the factions needs to use this .tga, the rest can use any other tga.

    For example this will not work:

    I get this crash a lot when I forget to use DXT5 compression when saving DDS files.

    Problem is these are direct copies of the files which already work in the installation, just re-named and the new names references in, I believe, all the requisite areas, as listed above. Shouldn't have anything to do with compression since it's just simple copy-paste-rename.

    Just make sure you haven't named it eastern_ambassador_song.tga.dds.dds, can happen if you have file extensions hidden.

    Mmmm, after looking at folder options, file extensions aren't hidden, but that's definitely intrepid thinking, that hadn't even crossed my mind really.

    This is really flooring me as far as errors go, which is hard to do for not being unspecified. The thing is, it lists all the textures as missing at some point during the error log, and then goes back to the ambassador, which is of them the one on the top of models_strat and has a seizure.

    Bolded are lines saying all of the textures are missing, but on quadruple-checking now, none of them are missing. The [system.io] is for files not in my folder that it then finds in the main folder, but it isn't going to find them in the main folder.... because they're in my mod folder.

    For whatever reason it seems to go through ambassador twice and the rest only once, indicated in the red above, before going through the 10x over check. None of the properties of the .tga.dds files are any different than the others, and using the Open Image in GIMP to see thumbnails of the images, there's no problem reading them either.

    Initially I thought maybe there was a hardcoded limit on the non-general agents, but that wouldn't explain why it fails to read the general as well during the first run through(and probably would fail eventually, but that it stutters before it gets there). Is there anywhere besides descr_model_strat and descr_character that I should be changing this I'm neglecting, perhaps?

    For some odd reason mod folders search for .tga and .dds(.tga.dds) files. Make sure you have both of those in your mod folder. Also, sometimes the .cas file just ends up screwed up upon conversion especially if converting from .ms3d. It will sometimes write extra bits of info which causes massive errors. This can cause the insufficient video memory error also. The way to fix that is unfortunately redo your model....sucks, I know.

    i noticed this line in the error log:
    00:16:16.734 [system.io] [warning] open: auh/data/world/maps/base/water_surface.tga.dds is missing
    i had the video memory exceeded once when i forgot to ad the water_surface.tga. i just repeated it and the log ended with these lines:
    16:29:54.991 [system.io] [warning] open: mods/holy/data/world/maps/base/water_surface.tga.dds is missing
    16:29:54.991 [system.io] [warning] open: mods/holy/data/world/maps/base/water_surface.tga is missing
    16:29:55.006 [data.invalid] [error] Insufficient video memory to load requested texture set.
    the water_surface.tga.dds that is missing in my case(i just renamed it) does not even belong to the map i am using, but there has to be a water_surface.tga.dds file. or else the game will try to render the watersurface from a non existent reference file.

    :hmmm: It was my impression the .tga and .tga.dds relationship was similar to the .txt and .txt.strings.bin. The game looks for the strings.bin. and also the text, but if it has the bin it is fine, and if it has the .txt it can create the bin. I don't think I need to have both .tga and .tga.dds, it should take either I'd guess, since BC has all .tga files in their textures folder and SS has all .tga.dds files in theirs. The modeling part is a useful tip, though I probably will never model , the current files are just a: right-click copy, right-click paste, right-click rename; ordeal, which is why I'm finding it hard to believe the game isn't reading them, when they're literally renamed clones of files that do work, referenced in all of the right places.

    Well the mod folder was working with the map and such, only ran into errors with the adding of the Song faction to all the relevant areas in finding the strat models. The water_surface.tga is in the right place, which is why it only showed .tga.dds missing and not .tga, since to my knowledge the game reads the .tga.dds knowledge from the .tga in the absence of it.

    I suppose I'll try axing some of the measures taken and reverting to known models that work, just to make sure this is the only problem and the game starts otherwise, before continuing.
