Forever have my people ruled this land. A beautiful plain with hills and forests as far as the eye can see. A never ending maze of adventure fills the air and the very ground seems ancient, filled with history. I was born in the village of Varel. My family and I, descendants of the Mandubii, have lived here forever. One month ago after the summer harvest, on a day as normal as any, a Roman war party entered our village with swords and torches, gashing and burning as they went. I was out getting water when I heard the screams.

The entire sky was blackened with smoke. There were about 150 soldiers and for each one stood 3 more bodies, lying motionless on the ground. The villagers were gathered, tied up, forced from the village in columns, and taken, only the gods know where. I stood there, my feet affixed like a stake to the ground, while the soldiers rummaged through the charred wood and bodies. When they finally left, it took all the courage in the world to enter. The air was poisoned with the smell of death. At that point I decided to leave, for there was nothing left for me, not even a family to bury.

For three days and nights I followed the river upwards not stopping for food or rest. I finally reached Alesia on the fourth day. It has changed considerably. The last time I was here was with my father, selling cattle. Since then a citadel, new walls, and seemingly endless array of towers, ditches, and other defenses, populated the fortified city, undoubtedly preparing for the coming storm. Upon approaching the gates, a familiar, tall and dark man of 30 years stood before me.
“Ah, Drostan, what brings you here? How is your father?”
After a moment of silence, I looked up at him and with a slight tremble in my voice said, “Varel is burning.”
“Burning? When? How?”
“The Romans came at the middle of the day. I was out getting water. Please, I am exhausted from the journey. Where is Glenna?”

And so the guard led me through the busy streets until I looked upon a memorable house and a familiar face. I knew Glen since I was very young. Her father and my father had a very good friendship and often traded with each other. Glenna and I were engaged to be married. It was just up to me to prove to her father my loyalty. Through supper I explained to her what happened. How the Romans came unexpected and how in one day my life was destroyed. I did not awake until the 3rd following day.
Chapter 2 will include Drostan's induction into the army and his service under Vercingetorix in the coming battle.
