    Default Stupid Javelinmen? (Kerns)

Great mod, my respects, but I have one major issue.

I can't get any of my javelinmen to fire, in fire at will or through my actual command. They just stand there, looking like they are ready to fire. Sometimes if I'm lucky, about 5 of 100 or so actually throw them.

I am using Real Recruitment/Real Combat, SSTC 1.2 hotfix, and Lusted Battle/Campaign AI. Is this a bug for the SS, one of these submods, or the engine itself? Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance, someone else had the same problem but no one replied.

Are they standing on walls or behind own troops or downhill?

From what I´ve heard its an animation-problem. The javelinman animation is to slow. Unless someone makes new animations for these we are stuck with them.

Well if the skeletons in SSTC 1.2 are working, maybe I did something wrong. Can I install the AOR skeletons without installing the AOR mod, or are there seperate downloads?

And when I was testing the kerns, it was a custom battle in an open field, no trees, no obstacles, etc. Limited firing

Javelins are great troops, but they need to be in a good position to fire. If the position is not so good, only a few will fire. Like other missiles they will not fire at enemies engaged by your troops. Also, take into account that their rate of fire is less than that of arrows.

I have found that the best position for javelins is right behind your melee troops, with skirmish disabled.

When they do get into a good firing position they will cause considerable damage to enemies, especially armored ones. See all those dead knights there? My kerns did it.

Don't you hit your own troops? Javs can't arch as well as arrows, so I always risk having my own troops shot in the back. Also, once the troops engage the Javs wont fire anymore, so they really only get 1 or 2 shots tops. I put them in front of my troops with skim enabled, that usually allows for a 3rd shot before they essentially become useless.

@dstarboy: Right now I'm playing an Aragon campaign. My javelinmen and almughavars worked just fine in the last battle. In fact they ran out of ammunition!

You have to find the exact point where they will have maximum effect, and enough space for their fire arch. As with any other missile, hills are ideal. They will fire as the enemies approach and as they disengage. If an enemy stands in front of your line stupidly, as it happens, he'll be sorry.

I don't feel that they cause "friendly fire" any more than archers do.

@aduellist: That is not a peculiarity of javelins, archers and crossbows sometimes continue firing when engaged in melee.

I find having them in skirmish mode makes them useless cause the range is so small, and the animation so slow, by the time they wind up to throw, they then stop and high tail it back.

I actually have the opposite problem when fighting javelin units, at least the Turkish and Kurdish variety. Not only do they not "high tail it back", they keep firing when in melee. Fought two battles against the buggers in one turn. Started the first battle with infantry, archers and three full units of Templar knights. By the end of the second fight my infantry had taken 60% casualties and my 180 knights were down to 46. Nothing like having a unit of heavy cav hit a unit of javs in loose formation with a charge, get fully stuck in, and watching the javs go through "reloading", "firing missiles". Not!

Lovely ground! Exactly the set-up to look for to get best effect from missile troops.
