    Default Basic Text Editing Tutorial

Hi Everyone this is my Tutorial on Basic Text Editing.

    Requirements:

    • A text editing program, Word Pad or Note Pad are fine
    • To Have unpacked all of your files
    • Have your io file first setup and your log ready in case of errors

The first thing that will be covered is Character Editing and Creating. Now, the first thing you need is your descr_strat.txt file contained in "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial campaign" folder. In this file you can find every single city and army in the entire campaign. You can do many things here, such as create a new army, change which factions are playable, change what level a city is, and more...For now though, we will stick to characters. Now, for this example I will create a character on the campaign map with an entirely new name. First I need to choose what Faction I will create him for, for this example I will choose England. So, scroll down to england's entry and find their Generals. The Entry Should Look Like This:

    character Richard, spy, male, age 20, x 107, y 160
    traits GoodSpy 2

    character Samuel Blacke, merchant, male, age 25, x 110, y 134
    traits GoodMerchant 1

    character Laurence Bidell, diplomat, male, age 29, x 107, y 130
    traits GoodDiplomat 2

    character Aston, priest, male, age 35, x 113, y 151
    traits NaturalPriestSkill 2 , StrongFaith 2 , PriestLevel 1

    character Robert, named character, male, age 24, x 104, y 134
    traits GoodCommander 2 , LoyaltyStarter 1 , ReligionStarter 1
    army
    unit NE Bodyguard exp 1 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Peasant Archers exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0

    character Cecilia, princess, female, age 25, x 111, y 151
    traits IAmPrincess 1 , NaturalPrincess 2 , GoodPrincess 1

    character Rufus, named character, male, heir, age 26, x 109, y 158
    traits Factionheir 1 , LoyaltyStarter 1 , NaturalMilitarySkill 1 , GoodCommander 1 , ReligionStarter 1
    army
    unit NE Bodyguard exp 1 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Peasant Archers exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Peasant Archers exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0

    character Arthur, general, male, age 26, x 107, y 155
    army
    unit Peasant Archers exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0

Now, I will add a unit into this entry, just mimic what you see in the above lines, like this:
character Chuck Norris, general, male, age 99, x 106, y 152 (The Coordinates I made up)
    traits LoyaltyStarter 1 , NaturalMilitarySkill 1 , GoodCommander 1
    army
    unit NE Bodyguard exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0

Now you have the entry ready just add it under the generals, like so:
    character Richard, spy, male, age 20, x 107, y 160
    traits GoodSpy 2

    character Samuel Blacke, merchant, male, age 25, x 110, y 134
    traits GoodMerchant 1

    character Laurence Bidell, diplomat, male, age 29, x 107, y 130
    traits GoodDiplomat 2

    character Aston, priest, male, age 35, x 113, y 151
    traits NaturalPriestSkill 2 , StrongFaith 2 , PriestLevel 1

    character Robert, named character, male, age 24, x 104, y 134
    traits GoodCommander 2 , LoyaltyStarter 1 , ReligionStarter 1
    army
    unit NE Bodyguard exp 1 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Peasant Archers exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0

    character Cecilia, princess, female, age 25, x 111, y 151
    traits IAmPrincess 1 , NaturalPrincess 2 , GoodPrincess 1

    character Rufus, named character, male, heir, age 26, x 109, y 158
    traits Factionheir 1 , LoyaltyStarter 1 , NaturalMilitarySkill 1 , GoodCommander 1 , ReligionStarter 1
    army
    unit NE Bodyguard exp 1 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Peasant Archers exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Peasant Archers exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0

    character Arthur, general, male, age 26, x 107, y 155
    army
    unit Peasant Archers exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
    unit Spear Militia exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0

    character Chuck Norris, general, male, age 99, x 106, y 152
    traits LoyaltyStarter 1 , NaturalMilitarySkill 1 , GoodCommander 1
    army
    unit NE Bodyguard exp 0 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0

Now to see the General's Name in the game, you have to go to ""C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\descr_names"
Here you should see all of the Factions in the game and all of the names they can possibly have, all you have to do is just add Chuck and Norris to the names like so:

Hello TWC world, very long time lurker very new member here. I have a question that is related to this topic.

By my understanding of the OP, I can go into the Descr_Strat file for my current SS6.1 campaign and change a Generals name? The reason I ask is I married an Irish Princess (mine) to a Scottish family member (theirs) and for some strange reason the game renamed him ",". That's right his name is now the symbol for a comma. (Is this a known bug? I've married princesses to other faction members numerous times before and this never happened).

So, opening the Descr_Strat file I should find my General now known as "," and be able to rename him something like Ewan MacGregor or Sean Connery (supposing both names are on the availability list)?

Nice name choice (he's an alumni of my high school, Go Spartans!)

Does anyone happen to know about rebel names?

I added a slave faction character named "Milorad Cavic" to one of my scripts, but in the slave area of the descr_names.txt it has old roman names. Can I just put the name/surname in any faction?

    Cheers,
    Augustus

I tryed doing that once and the name never showed up i would think that it needed to be under the correct faction.

Rebel names are for witches and heretics, if you want to add a name for a general you will have to use _

Just put the names in the proper files. In descr_names, just choose a faction that you would not mind seeing with those names, since they may be used by the faction at some point during the game.

    Hader,

Yeah, it should be right in the data folder. You might want to unpack again. Sometimes some of the files don't unpack. It has only happened to me once, but I think I remember some other people with the same type of issue.

It's somewhat related so I shall ask here, but is it possible to spawn an army without a general at its head? Can you create or spawn armies with priests and other characters?

I cannot seem to find the descr_names file. I know where it is supposed to be, but it isnt there. I dont know why it isnt, the only mods I have made to vanilla are in descr_strat, which have been working fine anyways. Am I missing something here?

Edit: yes my game is patched

Yup, I did the unpacking 3 days after installing patches and all, just because I wanted to play an unmodded version. But then I decided to begin modding it, unpack everything, etc., and still run into problems.

It was still tougher than RTW was
