    Default Importing Grain

How does importing grain work. It seems that for some cities this adds greatly to population growth. Why? In a recent campaign as the Scythians/Sarmatians nearly all of the cities i had in southern Russia and Crimea experienced this and grew by crazy amounts, like 6 or 7%. What is ironic about this is that as far as i am aware in the ancient period this region was a grain EXPORTER. What i would like to know is if this is automatic for some cities or whether there is some kind of trrigger.

AFAIK that's a hardcoded bug in the game. regions that are supposed to export are actually importing. same problem in the pontus region. ExRM does away with the whole grain trade anyway, so the problem disappears ....

Yep, definitely hard coded. Annoyed the heck out of me for years.

We didn't technically get rid of grain entirely. There's still a tradeable resource with the same value and appearance as grain. However, it's not the "grain" resource in the game engine. Therefore, it has no population effects at all. I think TIC does this, too.

Yeah, the whole Black Sea area is pretty much impossible to hold, especially for Barbarians, and within that especially for Sarmatians (who lack the infantry to simply do the old "abandon settlement, let settlement rebel, then slaughter loads of the populace" trick). Playing as Romans, I had to use that trick several times, taking up a lot of time and manpower that could have been used elsewhere. I even went so far as to keep the plague around to try and get the population down.

But now I play Metro-Naval, which like ExRm does away with grain.

If you destroy the city's port/dockyard it doesn't have as many trade routes and, as a result, doesn't export as much grain. This helps cut down the ridiculous population growth once a city gets too big. I did this with Agrigento playing as the Romans a couple of times. You will lose trade income, but it will really help keep population and squalor down.
