Ah, O.K. I'm sure they can offer an explanation soon.

Wow all those units are amazing! Great Job.

If I had to pick one unit which impressed me the most then I would have to name those "brodniki".
They look pretty bad-ass, the fur texture is brilliant.

If I could ask - Who are they? (brodniki) - they look like some mixture of russians and vikings to me.

They're bandits (river-ford bandits would be more accurate). Mercenary units for hire.

Historically, they lived in southern Russia (on the border with Kiev), (wiki link) but we made them for hire in all regions and added elements from many cultures to add a "riffraff" bandit feel.

Sweet, I can't wait to lead those blood thirsty bastards into the battle - and thanks for reply.

This is the only thing I was able to found about them on the net.

    Just so people know:

When we release the mod, all the units and other stuff (like the towns) will be free for use by anyone (provided you give us credit )

The only problem (a big one for us as well) - vanilla units look pretty blah in comparison and remaking all the units takes a looong time. Which is the reason, I think, CA did not realize the full potential of their graphic engine. Better units and graphics are always nice, but really - they add nothing to the game-play. And game-play is what makes, has always made, Total War stand out. It's the reason I bought, and will continue to buy, each new TW game that comes out, Empire and beyond.

And I'm glad that CA didn't make their units better, actually - it gives those of us that can't write awesome game engines something to do.

So use at your own risk

Our textures are made in photoshop from photo-references (not by me !).

The thing that really makes them stand out is the normal maps. Look at the model in this thread.

The texture is not all that super special. But with the added well-made normal map, the effect is amazing. (Although without a corresponding quality texture, even the best normal maps wont save you)

Totally awesome. I appologize for being skeptic and doubting how they will perfom in game engine. Now after I saw the units in-game, you, sirs, impressed me even more. Massive rep to all of you.
This is a graphical breakthrough for all the M2TW modding community. Seriously. Don't be modest about this, it's gonna be a hit when it's released. Absolutely brilliant.

A bit of information on the line-up (with screens):

Junior Militia (Opolchenie) - the most junior unit in the game. Formed from the population, they took up arms only in times of war to defend their homes. Non-professional soldiers and therefore weak, they have a good reason to fight for and thus relatively high morale.

Bow Militia (Luchniki) - The same as above, but with knowledge in the art of archery.

Novgorod Militia (Novgorodskoe Opolchenie) - Due to its political structure, Novgorod has always placed more importance in their militia. Thus it was better equipped and better trained.

Bulgar Militia - Available for hire in certain regions, Bulgar armies were better trained and organized.

Bandits - bloodthirsty riffraff, they'll sell their allegiance (as well as their mother and their soul) for gold. They are very fierce in numbers, but when the fat is in the fire - their first though is about saving their bacon.

Karell infantry - fierce northern warriors available for hire in certain regions.

Crossbowmen - as everyone knows, very effective against armor.

Brodniks - bandits sucking on the economic arteries of the day - rivers.

Ohochie Ludi - Hired mercenaries. Semi professional soldiers.

Spearmen - Spears require formation, and that requires lots and lots of training.

Junior Druzina - Druzina were elite, professional warriors who owed their allegiance directly to the Knyaz. One did not exist without the other.

Senior Druzina - more of the same, only better. Seasoned, experienced veterans.

Boyari - Russian nobility. Well armed nobility. Elite Novgorod units - they reserved the right to rule their city and defend it, if need be.

Gridni - a detachment of the very best of the Druzina, the Knyaz' personal regiment.

Close Druzina - The Knyaz' personal bodyguard.
