Rome jerky and quick?

Hi, have played RTW for a while now, but one problem is bugging me:

For the first sort of 30 mins of play, my PC is fine, but after that, the battles, campaign map everything gets jerky and quick. Like if I go in a custom battle, the faction icon for when you select factions will flash very fast. In the end I have to close the game down, and restart my PC

Is this my PC? It's a pretty good system, not designed for gaming I'll admit, but it's pretty fast and has a ATI Radeon X700 graphics card. :hmmm:
