Should the United States of America leave the United Nations?

A wild proposal, some may say, but there are plenty of Americans (including me) who see the UN as a threat to our sovereignty and a consistently anti-American organization.

What's your opinion on this topic? Non-Americans are welcome.

The UN is too liberal and weak to act or do anything to positively help the world... the US must re-breathe conservative principles into it.

No, no, no and um no. UN is crappy, UN is often useless, corrupt, idiotic and mindless....but the alternatives are worse then no UN. Reforming the UN should always be the goal, to improve it and not simply from an American perspective but it wont be because too many nations, the us included have a vested interest in it being the way it is.

Leave the United Nations. At the end of the day, the United Nations acts when it should not, and doesn't when it should. The organization gives far too much influence to countries who simply do not deserve it. But beyond that, I dislike the idea of an organization stepping in, interfering with internal policy decisions of a nation.

Well, anyone who knows me knows that I dont have much respect for the UN. I have said many times (in half jest) that we should just leave the UN. There are several reasons for this, the diminishing of our sovereignty is one reason. As is the (not so subtle) anti-American sentiment that permiates within that institution....

But if we are going to be practical...the answer is no...we cant leave. America (despite what many including liberals in this country say) is a great stabilizing force in the world...our presence in the UN and the threat of American troops bieng used against rouge (and belligerent) nation-states keeps many of them "in line". In addition the US provides massive, alomst inconcienvable aid to to the poorer countries in the world (I know many of you dont want to acknowlede that) but we (the US) gives more food, medicine, money and equipment than any other country and prob more than most of them put together...and our presence in the UN is a good vechicle for that aid. (I wont get into a debate on whether we should be giving this much aid...at least not here..if you want my opinions...I'll be happy to give them...start a new thread)

So to sum up.... I think we should get out and not look back.... but I know that wont happen...so I'll just piss and moan...and wait for it to collaspe on its own

That is the most idiotic idea out there! Leaving it would only mean it could be used against us! Staying in it keeps it as weak and as useless as it needs to be.

It's already being used against us. The UN has become nothing more than a forum for whining about the "plight of the Palestinians" and the "Zionist regime" and "American imperialism". Frankly, I doubt the UN would change very much if we left it. The only result would be that the USA would no longer be constrained and fettered by it.

You are seeing one side of it. The UN has also been used as a tool for the US, see first Iraq war, Korea etc and legal justification for action in Iraq after the second one. The alternative of no UN is simply worse then having a flawed one.
