I thought this was an interesting read that might shed some light on the events that lead to this conflict.

It focuses on the somewhat confusing events that triggered the russian response on the night between 7-8 August

the bottom line is that Saakashvili called for cease-fire and plead to not return fire on Ossetians and re-affirmed his commitment to peace in the region at 6pm and then borke his own words at 11pm, calling for "restoration of constitutional order in South Ossetia".

the rest is history.

The article stated that "Everyone agrees that the Georgian army launched an attack at 11.30 pm that night." but it raises the question if Georgia was responding to a direct threat.

I remember reading on this forum since the georgia/russia conflict mk1 and I've seen all the conflicting reports of both russian and georgian news channels, maybe this article can open new "doors"

its quite silly to even consider the fact that their invasion was justified at any rate. especially not after this invasion was carefully planned, Georgians massed troops and equipment to the South Ossetian border FOR MONTHS, and the timing of invasion was picked perfectly - on the eve of Olympic games, when the world's attention was distracted, when Putin was in Beijin and when Medvedev was on his planned vacation.

I do not think that Russian and Georgian news sources conflict on who actually started the war . and it wasnt and "attack" at 11:30, it was a full-scale invasion, the result of which lead to almost occupation of 11 South Ossetian settlements and partial control of Tskhinvali.

of course. nobody was going to stand by and observe signs of oncoming Georgian invasion. two months before the invasion, Georgians had massive joint military exercises with US army, a show of force. Russians knew very well what that could potential mean and took similar measures to show their determination that they will defend South Ossetia in case hits the fan.

everyone knew that Russians would step in if Georgians would invade South Ossetia. Georgians knew this. the whole world knew this. yet Georgian president felt like he could do this and still get away with it, since he was under full US diplomatic cover. well, he was terribly wrong .

You are not Czar, you are "derevnya" because you can't judge like a ceasar, and Russia never had a right to call it's prince a ceasar, even turkish sultan married daughter of Roman emperor, didn't make him a ceasar. So please continue "derevenshina", instead of talking about conflict resolution, you talk about stupid nationalist issues. I could have ass harassed Putin, Saakashvili and you togather, because you know nothing about simple Georgians, Russians and Ossetians, who don't want to die and are normal people.

In order to declare Russia's intrusion in South Ossetia inethical, it must first be declared that France's assisting of the US in our Revolutionary War was wrong as well.
