    Default Gates and seigeing armies

I'm writing this on my buddies (and mine) request. When being seiged upon by some neferious(?) foe, my self or my friend will send out cavalry to harrass units with ladders, trebuchets, etc., and upon returning to the castle the gates sometimes will not close. Even if units are pulled back from the gate, it still won't close. Does the amount of damage matter? Another thing is, seigeing armies just line up straight out from the gate and stand there and take all sorts of abuse by archers, manganels, etc. Is this a bug or does it depend on the difficulty level being played? I had another question, but I forgot what it was. Thanks for any help, my warmongering friends at the un-official MTW forums(Ireally hate the OFFICIAL site) P.S. Why the hell is it such a pain to get my posts to show up right away?

I think they all gather behind the ram to quickly rush in once the gates are down, and to rush to the aid of the siege crew in case you attack the ram.

You should be sending your cavalry through a side gate, not the front one if you don't want enemies to follow you inside and take over that gate.

Absolutely, and to further allow you to attack the flanks and rear of the attacking swine with your cavalry as they attempt to carry the breach.

It's kind of a cheap strategy since AI often abandons its equipment and archers far from main force so you can take them with little losses on your side. Smart AI would know how to counter this... but we don't have smart AI.

Any unit on ground close enough to gate can end up blocking the gate open.

So pulling cavalry in is not enough, all ground level (on the walls is ok) away from gate may be necessary.

That is why side gate assaults work better, there shouldn't be anyone around to block the gate open.

Damaged rams in the gateway can also cause gates to remain open (once the gate is opened from the inside) even if the ram didn't break it down.

I can confirm this. It has happend to me also. And it is like this gentelmen said, no one bz the gates, no obstacle in the gates, and the gates still will not close. And the enemy seems to know that the gate are "actually closed" because they do not try to enter.

Yeh this happens to me too!!

Also another "bug" is that when the AI sallys forth the gates stay open so you can sneak in a unit of cavalry and let them take the gate and sit in the town square! (Not sure if it happens in SS tho can never be bothered waiting that long naymore)

Sometimes. But you still have to beat them first or at least sneak behind them.
