    Default Changing religion

    Can some1 please tell me how to change religion for Byzantine empire from orthodox to catholic.
    And if it is possible to be able to do everything the catholic factions could do: vote popes, join crusades etc. etc.

    After you export the mod so you can change it:

    First you open: descr_sm_factions.txt
    Go to "faction byzantium"
    and change "religion orthodox" to "religion catholic"

    second go to export_descr_buildings.txt
    Go to "building temple_catholic"
    and add "byzantium" to the list of factions (in the { } ) for all the catholic churches.
    Do the same for the castle catholic buildings.
    Then go to "building temple_orthodox" and remove byzantium from the list of factions from all the orthodox buildings.

    Sorry for asking again....
    So I will be able then to recruit a catholic priest rather than orthodox?
    Will I be able to join a crusade?

    If you made the changes properly all things available to Catholic factions should be available to you. You will need to start a new game for the changes to take effect however.

    You've mentioned mod, but I was meaning vanilla Medieval II. Anyway how to see the files where you change that stuff?

    I am sorry if I am getting a bit annoying for you...

    It would be in Medieval II Total War/data/logs as a .txt file.

    If it isn't there then you need to add error logging to your .cfg file.

    [log]
    to = logs/mymod.log.txt
    level = *script* trace

    You're not. Don't worry.
    Changing the Medevial II vanilla files is the same as changing them in a mod.
    What's causing the crush is probably a typo on the buildings.txt check the log file as the other posters told you and post it here so we can help you more.

    You were right alhoon... the mod works now
    So now I wanna change the same stuff in vanilla... the only problem is I can't see export_descr_buildings.txt file nowhere. How can I change that?

    You will probably need to use the unpacker (if you haven't already) in the tools folder...

    OK so I've unpacked and changed religion for the byzantines, but when I get in the game there are no changes at all...

    Did you add the following line to your Medieval II Total War/medieval2.preferences.cfg file?

    [io]
    file_first = true

    No... I will do it tomorrow and then tell if it worked.
    There is also something that is very interesting to me: in the export_descr_buildings if you go to the building which are available to the byzantines there are two ways of which the buildings can be connected to them - in one case it says "greek" in the other it says "byzantium".
    Why is that so?
    And another thing: should there be a , at the end of the factions list in the brackets like so: ..., venice, byzantium, } or is it OK if it is without it?
    Oh and btw, the changing religion thing works good with SS6.1 and I've already captured Jerusalem in a crusade ... the only thing that bothers me is that priests are without colour. How do you fix that?
    And the last question: cardinals are lvl 2 priests or 3? I think I saw in descr_strat file that Gavriel Branas (Byzantine bishop) is a lvl 1 priest...

    1. greek is the culture while byzantium is the faction
    2. The comma is needed
    3. You would need to make a skin for the priests and redefine them in descr_character.txt
    4. Cardinals are level 3 - Bishops are level 2.

    Ok, so I'm guessing that you use greek in the buildings like guilds, aqueduct etc. and byzantium in buildings like barracks, stables... ?
    Can some1 please make the skins and send the folder on my mail?
    I don't have the nerve to do this...
    Or if it's simple tell me how.

    You shouldn't need to make new skins for the priests, byzantium already has an orthodox priest skin, and the descr_character.txt and descr_models_strat.txt aren't connected to the notion of a religion. Your faction should be able to have a Muslim Iman model and a Moors skin and still be a catholic faction, as long as the edits are done right. Did you make any changes in either of the aforementioned files?

    I changed orthodox priest, bishop and patriarch into catholic priest, bishop and cardinal in descr_character.txt, but nothing in the other file...
