Default The Collapse of Your Empires.

Hi guys I am just wondering about how you have failed your campaigns and had your Empires crushed etc.

One that I remember was when I was playing as the Brutii. I had taken over Greece and Macedonia fairly early in the game. I don't know what came over me, but I then went very gung-ho which wasn't a good idea. I had one Army engaged in a hopeless fight against the Egyptians, while a smaller force had to defend from the Carthiginians to the West. I also had one Army in the North West, at war with the Britons and the Germanians. That wasn't all though.

I had another force in the North East and they ended up being at war with all the factions such as the Dacians and the Scythians. They were cut off, under-trained, and eventually mainly consisted of Peasants and Town Guards. Finally, I had another army trying to defend some Spanish settlements from Spain and the Gauls.

I have no idea what happened here, or as to how my forces became so thinly stretched, eventually I knew there was no way I could turn it around, and headed for Rome itself. Obviously the Julii and Scipii turned on me, and they helped everyone else to rout all my remaining settlements and Armies. This was such an epic fail! Has anyone else been in similar positions?

I usually like to keep one or two fronts and only be at war w/ one or two nations. You should be able to retrain and replenish armies and if you find yourself in a spot where you can't, then you're probably over-extended.

My empires have never failed me. Maybe it's the AI. I have heard a good one about a guy playing a BI campaign. I don't remember the specifics but he had captured a huge expanse of land in Europe when his faction heir rebelled, taking half the empire with him. Around the time this happened some other faction came at him from the west, breaking down his western territories.

too bad the romans cant horde

any way i havent really failed badly but as the egyptians i had taken all of the east basicly but i was too stretched and some of my settlements had no army in them the gauls were surprisingly the biggest faction and had basicly destroyed the romans [except the senate] and then they and numidia ganged up on me and i was left with 3 provinces so i just gave up

i now make sure im not too stretched and that im only at war with 1 or 2 factions.

Playing with Roma Surrectum, I was Rome, and had taken all of Iberia, Italy, and the coastal areas of Africa. Also had conquered half of Gaul and most of Greece/Macedon. I decided to push into the Sahara as the rebels were annoying me there.

I send three full stacks with my best generals and legions. Bit by bit they were ground to bits and finally after probably 20 battles they fell.

During this time, the Gauls and Germans invaded and I lost most of Gaul to them. In the east, Dacia started wreaking havok on my armies and it got to the point where I'd build forts at every defensible spot, put 1 town watch in there, and then stall for time as I created armies.

I recovered my lands eventually, but it took forever.

Why on earth you decided to turn for Rome while you were getting pawned on all fronts? In your place, I would grant a few provinces to the senate or the other Roman factions and withdraw as fast towards my "mainland" (Italia, Greece) as possible, forfeiting my empire. Sure, from 30 provinces you would drop to 10, but you could keep them and expand again.

lol thats never happened to me. The closest was as the juliik, suddenly the germans went blitzing on Noricum with 3--4 stacks in a turn.

Well, once I was Spain, and and had sort of expanded so that I could wipe out carthage who were constantly transporting armies to my doorstep, and at the same time had two armies who were destroying what was left of Gaul. Was actually going pretty well until I took a gallic settlement and my forces slammed right into Germania which had a huge amount of land under its control, and for some random reason the numidians were doing pretty well too. So the numidians and julii pretty much took carthage away from me while germany took gaul.

I've never lost. Honestly, I don't see how it's possible. Surviving, at the very least, should be easy, and you should be able to expand when you can.

My thoughts exactly, particularly in vanilla. I've only ever lost one campaign, on XGM (which is far more difficult), as Pontus. Armenia, the Greeks and TSE decided to gang up on me and my 4 cities in 270 BC. I could have taken one of them but between the 3 of them they sieged all of my cities simaltaneously and trapped my one field army in Nicomedia with 3 Greek stacks beside it...

I took over the entire world as Carthage recently. I really wanted to continue the campaign and watch as my empire crumbled apart from civil revolts, but NO, it had to force me to quit to the main menu!!!!!!!

Well sometimes its more fun to go gung-ho and push yourself to the limit, this is how real empires were made, not by biding your time and slowly expanding. It also livens up campaigns i find. But i am normally too careful to go too fast with the expanding.

if you wanna fail a campaign then SPQR mod will make that wish come true for most. I never failed at my attempt at the mod, but it gave me a good spanking early on

yeh when i get on the game il probably bidfe my time for aboput 1 year (4 turns owns) and u have like 5-6 setlements when u start so ide split them if i had 5 settlements ide send 3 to the top of the roman border (up north to defend from the gauls) and the other 2 towns to protect rome and also they will be my main money makers. after all rome has 5 legions... they dotn need _alot_ of protection...
