Default IHT: Suicide attack in Pakistan kills at least 60

    http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/08/21/asia/22pstan.php

what i don't understand is this: if so many in the Pakistani secret service support the Taliban, why don't they feel guilty when something like this happens regularly? are they different ethnicities? are they more fundamentalist than nationalist?

The ISI, which is part of the Pakistan Army, does not support the Taliban. Why? Because the ISI and the Army and actively involved in fighting them in Bajaur, South Waziristan and Swat. It doesn't make sense to kill 500+ of them in the same war and then trying to blow up a Pakistan Army arms manufacturing plant.

The Pakistani Army has managed to stay united despite the sectarian and ethnic differences here. It's one institution in which allegiance to it ranks above everything else. History is testament to this as we've had Pashtun, Punjabi, Sindhi, Baloch as well as Urdu-speaking generals and army chiefs.

So about this attack: as long as the army massacres in the tribal area on behalf of the US (whose Afghan policies have failed miserably and who've resorted to shifting the blame on the closest country since most of the world stopped buying the Iran-Taliban pact story that the US was trying to push forward a couple of years ago), the victims will respond in any way that they can.

The Pakistan "leadership" should make a principled stand here and end this civil war. The Pakistani people felt sick enough when they let their air-space be used to bomb Afghan weddings but fighting the US's false war ourselves and against our own people is beyond cancer.

okay, but are the continuous rumours of information leaks and such from the ISI to the Taliban only rumours then? I don't have a link lying around, but i definitely read about it in several papers... the Americans think so, don't they?
and didn't the pakistani army recently tune down a lot of their operations in the tribal areas, which should make them much less of a target for the taliban?

The Pakistani army and the ISI are doing a good job in battling the Taliban and their corrupt ideals.

However because of American ignorance many of the good work that the Pakistani's have done are in the drain. I mean bombing wedding parties? Yeah wonderful job America!

The Pakistani's are trying to control the region and if the Americans don't get thier game in gear and step out and understand where to bomb and where not to, poor Pakistani's will pay for thier price.

Well, it's in the interest of the Pakistan Army as well as the Pakistani people to pursue peace here. The Pakistani Army started the fight when it illegally invaded the autonomous South Waziristan area last year on Bush's orders. Ever since then, thousands have paid with their lives and hundreds of thousands have been displaced. NATO should pull its socks up and at least TRY to get the more sissy members to get more fighting men on the ground and stop blaming Pakistan for its failures.

Either that or accept that it's time to go home and leave this area in peace. But there are natural resources involved so the US isn't going anywhere.

Delvecchio1975, the operations in the recent past have only intensified, if anything, and hence this retaliatory attack.

Considering he lives in Pakistan I could say he has a much better view than you, mr. arm chair discussionist.

Hell I'd say he'd be more qualified than 90% of Americans by simply pointing at where Pakistan is anyway.

well he seems to know what he's on about. but what of the recent negative american attitude towards pakistan about the tribal areas? they chide the pakistanis for not fighting the taliban, wouldn't they be more supportive if the pakistanis actually were?

Well in that case Ill say that Bush is a brilliant and inspired leader! You are unable to refute this of course because you arnt from the USA and if you arnt from the USA then you couldnt understand the situation!

actually since he lives in pakistan I would say he is under the influence of corruptive propaganda; and probably delusional about his role and his nations role in this whole business; he is also likely very rich compared to his fellows in the nation and has no more right to speak about it than any american "arm-chair discussioners "

to justify the mass murder of people for political goals ; is absolutely disgusting and I dont care where you are from; your an idiot if you think that its okay to blow people up.

What is wrong with these people? What do they get by killing innocents? And one thing that bothers this thing seems very normal when in pakistan but let's say if it happened in France there would be huge reactions.Poor pakistani people!
