    Default National ID

What are your views on the National ID law or whatever its properly called?

I flatly defy the law and cant see how the federal government can take over the powers of the state. Technically if you should even need an ID to prove you are a citizen. I thought that is what a Soc Security card was for.

As a sidenote they sent my kid home today with a paper trying to get me to get my kid an ID card. They want to fingerprint my child as well as request that we as their parents submit private information. It is not a requirment but the wording on the form makes it look like you would be doing wrong by not getting them into a Child ID program.

From my understanding McCain supports the National ID 100 percent
Obama and Ron Paul both flatly do not support National ID

Of course Ron paul is no longer a candidate.

    Source, Vexille?

I don't really know anyone who would support such a measure. We already have Social Security as a means of identification and our finger prints on our Driver's Licenses. The government has enough to identify killers.

What state do you live in? Here in Ohio no one ever fingerprinted me. Nor did they when I lived in Pennsylvania.

Thats bout the most Un-Libertarian thing I've ever heard Vexille.

Also, is Obama really? Considering Ron Paul isn't going to be an option, I may cast my vote Obama's way.

God I threw up a little in my mouth just typing that. I hate our country's politics.

I dont see why there is such a issue about a national ID, its just a card proving youre citizenship. I do believe like a credit card there should be backups however incase a citizen loses it.

As imagine the nightmare of not being able to prove who you say you are.

Plus it would make illegal immigration all that much harder.

Let's just hope they were fascist communist kittens who were on their way to international fascist communist fair.

It's not the job of the federal government to keep tabs on all of its citizens. Besides, as I said, there are already plenty of means of identification.

Also, it would not make illegal immigration harder. It's not like any of them have driver's licenses or anything. Nor would they ever need to get an ID card.

I flat out don't want my name in a database unless I go out and start killing random people in the night.

Besides, it creates HUGE gov't waste and bureaucracy.

And I'm a socialist, so you should listen when I say the gov't is spending and doing too much...

Uhm...won't it make things a lot easier and REDUCE paperwork?

Think about all the forms you have to fill out to prove your identity, like when you want to vote or when you need medical treatment. - that would not be needed anymore.

No, it's not going to reduce paperwork.

Essentially all this is doing is setting a national standard for drivers licenses and pooling state databases. If a place requires photo id and your social security card that's not likely to change.

It doesn't even do away with the 50 individual state licensing boards. All it does is impose standards on them.

Hopefully if Obama gets elected they'll get rid of this damn thing. It's already been pushed back a few times.

Totally against any form of mandatory national ID. Especially in Britain, where the current government simply cannot keep our data safe!

President Bush signed the Patriot act, so he could spy on you. He's signing the ID so they can follow you. Next is cameras in your house.

Being Portuguese and having an ID all my conscient life i somewhat fail to see what having an ID has anything to do with fascism...

What basically is an ID? A card that has some data about you and serves as identification. That's it... When you go for a passport don't you disclose your info to the state?

Trust me, the state already has your data somewhere. Americans have social security cards that already have data associated with them. I fail to see how putting a fingerprint in a card will have this whole dramatic effect on your life. Besides, in Portugal we do not have fingerprints in our driving licenses and you do. If now they require me to fingerprint my driver's license should i start screaming about encroaching fascism?

Besides, it creates HUGE gov't waste and bureaucracy.
How so? It's just an ID card... Instead of having several cards to demonstrate you are you, now you will be having just one card. How is that such a huge increase in bureaucracy?

Also, it would not make illegal immigration harder. It's not like any of them have driver's licenses or anything. Nor would they ever need to get an ID card.
Well, but you can be a person that doesn't want or need a driver's license. So if you if you don't have a driver's license you're not an american? Basically if the police asks for your ID and you don't have it or are able to present it or are not part of the national database then you are not a citizen. Cuts the red tape for law enforcement.

People, point me one serious disadvantage for the comon citizen of a national ID. It's not about privacy because your data is already out there, and it's not this:

I flat out don't want my name in a database unless I go out and start killing random people in the night.
Because, dude, this may come as a shock to you, but your name is probably already in several databases connected to more than one state service.

So what does a Federal ID card do to prevent immigration or fake IDs? Nothing, it does nothing at all. Just a pipe dream they are feeding us until the have us under complete domination.

I do not support this measure at all, for several reasons. First, I am a libertarian, so the idea of one national ID sounds very big-brother-ish, which I do not like at all. Secondly, what would a national ID do that a state ID can't? Nothing, excluding making ones ID known throughout the nation to all states. This could easily be remedied with a data sharing program between the states, rather than a whole new program for the federal government to administer, because we all know just how amazingly efficient and effective the federal government is.
