    Default Southerners and Jesus

I'm not trying to be rude about southern people but what makes them so igorant in their beliefs? I went to Kentucky to visit my grandma and she's Penecoastal. I was talking to her about the bible and told her that none of the bible was ORIGINALLY in english. She thought I was on some type of drug or something and said I didn't believe in God.

I was then later in a discussion with my grandma about Adam and Eve (you may remeber the "Adam and Eve and other people" thread). She said that Cain had sex with chimps and they caused black people to show up.

Then she told me that killing is justifible because "Jesus is the whiskey in your bottle and the bullets in your gun!". That kind of scared me. So what causes this backward and strange thinking?

Well you are being rude to southern people by making sweeping generalizations. My grandma is from Kentucky too. She is a Presbyterian, an evolutionist and sharp as they come.

Alot of that stuff is just the strange beliefs of the Pentecostals. Doesn't have to do with southern people.

It is more Pentecostals then southern people in general. She's from Wolf Creek and is a Moses (last names). They have some very weird thoughts....

It's not just the south. Everywhere I go I'm surrounded by ignorance and it's driving me insane. I'm lucky I haven't blew a fuse yet because of it.

I think it's safe to say your grandmother is a bit off her rocker. That sentiment is fairly unusual of a southern Christian.

You mean even for a southern Christian.

Also southerners like to kick ass. But they call themselves Christian. It's a leap of logic I tell you. Jesus got HIS ass kicked. He didn't kick ass.

What? One would think that Jesus's resurrection would be the ultimate last laugh.

She sounds like an old racist woman. While I love to take the piss out of the south whenever I can, (Southern Baptists anyone?) you really can't generalize the entire populace based on a racist, ignorant old lady.

Kentucky isn't in the south. That's not our problem.

The best way i can put it is that your grandmother is a relic of the past. Her ideas are outdated, based on racism and ignorance, and are virtually pointless. I guess just let her be and leave her alone to her ideas. I'm thankful and am glad to see you think these ideas are idiotic, showing that her bad influence didn't affect you.

She said that Cain had sex with chimps and they caused black people to show up.
I explained this in a thread long before, Bibicial explanation for "Negroids" is the "Cursing of Ham" (the give an explanation if your curious). Doesn't every bible loving grandma know that? Seriously

But it doesn't really say that his skin goes dark.
I wish people would stop trying to understand religious texts in such a "hit-and-miss" kind of way.

Then your obviously not reading the whole context and fail to understand the "symbolism" of the day...

I'm just simply stating the common belief and interpretation.

    Anyways

Kentucky is in the South because its the home of Kentucky Fried Chicken. If it's not the south, then the Colonel was a great actor.

I kinda take personal offense to this statement considering half of my family are Southern Baptists. Southern Baptists aren't all fundies. Fundamentalism stems from a variety of factors, not just denominations.

At least the family reunions won't be droll. . .

    You get to evangelize!

It's one of the worst parts about living in the south. These evangelicals down here think they can trespass and solicit (in a neighborhood with a sign clearly placed on both entrances that explains to visitors that NO SOLICITING IS ALLOWED) their religious beliefs just because they believe they have "the truth".

Maybe you should explain to her the Out-of-Africa origin. I am sure she would love to know that, technically, she is black (like everyone else).

Also one time I met a northerner who hated Mexicans, why are all northerners like that?

It is the south after all. You cant expect southeners to be as smart or sensible or even as good looking as people from the north. When a southener starts going on about jesus just smile and nod or try an distract them by telling them there possum soup and gritts are starting to burn!

Southeners are special and should not be put down by those who live in the north. You wouldnt make fun of a retarded child would you? So why would you put down a southener.

in closing i love the south, helmets and all
Southerners aren't as smart as Northerners and you think Kentucky is part of the south.
