Ok this is questionable ethically but... move all soldiers out of the rioting city to right out side of it. Let them rebel, then move in and exterminate the cities pop
yes
no
I care to much about ethics to try

It works AND you gain money!
yupthough ... if this were mtw2 you would have high dread

First off you may well have to face a large rebel army to re-take the town/city
Exterminating the populace is a short term fix, the problems that caused you to be short of money in the first place will still be there and in the medium term you will have made them worse by killing off taxpayers and reducing growth towards a larger town/city
You can help reduce riots by queueing a load of peasants
hmm... yes well I never seem to have those problem's when I have about 29 cities as the Julii![]()
Agreed but it is better for you in the long term, and you don't pay for the upkeep of peasants in a queue, all you are doing is reducing the amount of potentially rebellious citizens in your city for a turn or 2 and once you have built a temple then you can remove them from the queue, without having to leave the city and fight and possibly loose a siege
downside of this is that you don't get the immediate cash injection from massacering them
it works, i use this mainly in rome though, exterminate the huge cities and make them small size, it will cut into your money a bit from taxes, but you get enough from the looting to make up for it
in medeival 2 if i have a dread general i like to play to that and exterminate the cities anyway, if im chivalrous ill sack if i need it but almost always occupy
also, if its not THAT well developed, ill destroy the barracks so im fighting peasent armies, it make it a whole lot easier in the long run

wow never thought of thatgood work thanks

no problem, also make sure you dont have archery ranges in the said city, an 20 archer army is a pain to beat in a seige

actualy thats a greta idea which i do all the time. So u lose population and get less taxes but so what. You loot the city and gain lots of cash. and the city will have less population so u can raise taxes to max and they would still be happy, so i guess great idea.
Has anyone noticed that when you exterminate one city, the rest of your empire seems to become happier.
I'm on the brink of finishing an IC w/ the Scipii when Alexandria revolts and ousts my nearly full stack and family member stationed there. I've had rioting all over the map and have exhausted nearly everything that increases popularity, public order and cuts down on squalor. Within 2 turns, I reconquer Alexandria and its epic stone walls and exterminate the populace. All of a sudden, Memphis (who had 0 public order on the round before) and every rioting city from the round before straightened up and public order boomed.
It seems that the right hand of discipline extends even further than the city to which it's applied. Can anyone confirm this as truth or was it some weird coincidental timing issue that may have caused this surge in public gratitude to my Scipii imperial family?
I did that once and came up against a full stack of Yubtsebs.
Whenever you do that- DESTROY ALL AMPITHEATRES AND GLADIATOR TRAINING BUILDINGS!!
or the entire city![]()
I'd be against it in real life, but in Total War games, I'd kick my rebelling populace's butt.![]()
Thats the beauty of video games

Of course it works.
Want a fun campaign? Choose a faction where you can quickly build up an impregnable position, maybe relocate. A civillisation faction on Britania is very good. From this position you can raid the mainland Europe, attack a city, take it, maybe the first few times enslave them to boost your core cities then destroy everything in it and leave it to rebel. Then you can either wait for it to grow (unlikely rebel held) or wait for an AI faction to take it and upgrade it before raiding the mainland again, exterminating, destroy everything and just keep repeating. Could be fun to say Hold Spain, Britain, all the islands etc. Play as the Vikings!
