Default Books you would like to see made into Films?

So what books would you like to see made into films?

Can cover any ground, any subject.

My current list is as follows:

    1. The Religion by Tim Willocks - about the Siege of Malta in 1565, an awesome book that would make an awesome film.

    2. A Booke of Days - The journal of a Minor Lord of the First Crusade. Interesting and moving with a tragic ending, it could make a very good film indeed (Provided that NO Orlando involvement could be guaranteed.

    3. Earth by David Brin - Singularities eating the Earth's core, environmental issues, philosophy and a staggering vision of 2038. However, after The POstman debacle David may have been scared off for life.

    4. Spares by Michael Marshall Smith - just a great sad and funny novel about people grown as spare parts and the guy who rescues them. Brilliant.

    5. The Foundation Trilogy - this might already be being attempted but could be brilliant.

So, any more ideas out there?
    The Devshirme
On the night the scarlet horsemen took him away - from all that he knew and all he might have known - the moon waxed full in Scorpio, sign of his birth, and as if by the hand of God its incandescence split the alpine valley sheer into that which was dark and that which was light, and the light lit the path of devils to his door.

Young Blood by Simon Scarrow, even though their are alot of Napoleon movies. I don't think any of them tackle Napoleon and Wellington both at once with an intertwined storyline. Simply great book, would like to see a movie.

I think it would make a verry epic and moving movie if done correctly, it has everything, battle, hardship, betrayal, comradeship, inspiring leaders, everything I tell you

Roger, would you reccomend Scarrow as a writer in general? (I haven't read any of his yet)

It's the account by Xenophon of the 10.000 Greek mercenaries who acompanied Cyrus the younger in battle against his brother the king of PErsia, the Greeks win their part of the fight but the battle is lost, next comes their struggle to reach Greece whilst traveling in ennemy territory, They couldn't just turn tails, they had to find a new route since there where no more foraging options behind them.

I enjoyed the Rising Tide by Shaara. That has to be one of the best WW2 novels, I hope a film is made about it.

It goes through the lives of Montgomery, Rommel and Eisenhower, Patton and other commanders and some soldiers fighting in the war in North Africa in WW2 as well as in Sicily, and the planning of operations, it was quite fascinating story actually.

The Algebraist. The world has not seen a good space-opera for 20 years.

Or any of The Culture novels by the same author (Iain M. Banks). Intelligently handled, they could make a lot of people re-appraise their perception of sci-fi.

I would love to see The God Delusion made into a docu-film - if only for the carnage that would accompany its release in Bible-belt America.

    Totally agree.

At a booksigning and reading I got talking to Iain Banks when the Algebraist came out in hardback. He said there was no movie or tv deals in the offing - not that there hadn't been discussions. He said he was wary of losing control, doesn't need the money and most of his books would need a mini series.

How about 'Against a Dark Background'? Just awesome, awesome adventure.

How about a docu drama of 'God is Not Great' by the always interesting Hitchens??

I'll third the idea of any Banks SF being made into films - his work makes all other sci-fi seem ... well, dumb and badly written. Because most of it is. A movie version of a Banks novel would show all those Star Wars/Star Trek/Star Dreck movies to be the wittering nerd-wanks they are.

There was a lot of talk about Consider Phlebas being made into a film, and in many ways it's got the most filmable and potentially crowd-pleasing story. The Use of Weapons is my favourite, but it would take a genius film-maker to do the convoluted structure of the book justice. The Player of Games is a great story, but there probably isn't enough action for that to get green-lighted. And The Algebraist and Matter (his latest) are amazing, but it would be hard to cram them all into a movie.

I think Phlebas and perhaps Excession would be the best candidates of the Culture novels.

How about 'Against a Dark Background'? Just awesome, awesome adventure.
And twisted stuff as well. Not sure how concepts like the Lazy Gun or the Solipsist Commandos would translate from the page though. It might all comes across as a bit more like Douglas Adams than Ian M. Banks. :hmmm:

Dawkins sort of beat him to the punch there though.

I'd still like to see a proper War of the Worlds. And I mean a proper version of H.G. Wells' book, minus Scientotlogy weirdos, cute little moppets, family angst and ... well ... Americans.

Princes of Amber. No other fantasy novel has kept me more hooked. Well it was a collection of books actually..

A Miracle of Rare Design. Excellent book, with interesting worlds and settings. Also dealings of ethics and religion with alien species, along with a man losing his humanity.

Enders Game. If you've read it you know why. Simply a great book, and I hear there may have been one in the works already *runs off to imdb*

"Time machine" - though It has been made into the movie already, but It is too bad to be counted as the adaptation of this masterpiece.

Silmarillion and Hobbit (which is already in-production)
