If you had a time machine that had 1 use only (you couldn't even come back), could carry 1 person only (without possessions), but which could take you to any place, any period of history, teach you the relevant language and put you in a position in society roughly equivalent to your current set-up (ie. if you were a reasonably well-off middle-class person who went to ancient rome, you would then be a well-off plebeian)...

...where and when would you go? (if anywhere - you could always stay in the present if you think that would be best)

1. Russian and Allies start WW2 instead of Germany and Allies... Because Russia also invaded Poland you know.

2. Overpopulation. The population of the world would be a bit bigger and more overcrowded!

3. We'd be back in technology, seeing as MANY inventions came from the War, such as Radar.

Actually, I took a course at UCLA, and we covered how much of a dent WW2 made in the human population and the growth rate. Not much, to tell you the truth. Things picked up VERY quickly after the war.

I would go back to the 18th century bring antibiotics with me (or a guy who knows how to make antibiotics), along with modern medicine practices and make a killing off of people and armies, in the 7 years war, and the war with Bonaparte. Many a young lad would be saved an arm and a leg and modern medicine would be even more advanced today.

Then I'd build a castle/ palace in England, buy myself a title and live happily ever after with a vast fortune.
