    Default Fall of the Pope

I've wondered is it ever possible to destroy the papal states? Or am I plagued until the end of time to be the subject of crusades?

your plagued, but you could just destroy all the catholic factions so there is no crusaders to make the army

Ally the Pope really early (like the first 10 turns, send your diplomat immediatly!) and keep relations good with donations and you're set for pretty much the whole game as far as inter-Catholic war is concerned, he'll rarely bother you and regularly accept Crusade requests (from my experience anyway, H/H usually)

if you take advantage of the stupid diplomacy AI, then ally with the pope if you're not catholic, and try to keep relations as high as possible, it will help defending crusades i think

If you destroy the Papal States, the Pope will excomunicate you... The penalty of Excomunication at the cities are big, and thats not good for public order...

Actualy yes, you can eliminate the pope without getting excom'd. It happened to me totaly by accident, no one was training new priests so once all the old cardinals had died and the pope had died there was no pope. The college was empty so they couldnt elect a new pope, stayed that way for about a decade before those bastard spainish trained some priests and sent them to north africa.

You could do it if you had a massive amount of assasins and followed all the cardinals around and had more assasins posted around the world waiting for new ones to be elected.

or, if you have several really good ones, you can keep assassinating the pope as he gets re-elected, since he's always going to be transported to rome upon election. that will slowly whittle down the amount of cardinals waiting to be elected

It sucks that they're the only faction that can't be destroyed... well, maybe not, because it would be ing terrible if the Mongols/Timurids kept sending an unlimited number of hordes out toward your ripe, small-garrisoned cities in the Levant.

You actually can destroy them. Just take over Rome and then kill the pope. A new pope will get elected... Just kill the new popes repeatedly and eventually they will run out of popes to elect... I did it the other day.

Eliminating the Papal state is possible, but I don't think It worths It. Why no one likes that poor, old guy? :

Well, you can give the Pope some nice remote island, then try taking Rome. I think the next Pope will spawn at the isle, not right under your walls
