    Default Siege Crashes

Hey, I'm just putting this problem here because I don't really know where else I would put it, so if there's a better place for it feel free to move it. This particular problem frustrated me so much that I stopped playing the mod, and the problem is that an enormous number of cities across the entire map and in every faction's scope will cause the game to crash if you lay siege and then choose to fight out the battle instead of automatically resolving it. Is there any knowledge of this problem or is it common and fixable? It just kind of ruins the game when you have to pray that it won't crash when laying siege.

Someone contacted me once via PM with the same issue. We tryed couple of things, and eventually he responded that he got it fixed. Never shared the details, though. So I can tell you its fixable and its probably bug.

I would suggest to uninstall everything, install BC and patches + fixes without any other mods, and try again.

It would be helpful, if you would activate logging and provide a log after the crash occured.

Was a solution ever found for this? I'm having the exact same problem. Also if I start a custom battle and select a fort or town or any structure, the game instantly crashes. Open-field battles work just fine though.

Nevermind I just didn't have the game properly patched, it works fine now.

This is very probably a problem caused by the installation of other mods. I have this problem myself now, after installing Reconquista and Rusichi, so one of these must have changed the core MTW files, bugger, I had such a beautiful campaign: Abbasid, 35 regions, mongols coming and selsjuks reduced to rubble All gone and some hours of installation to go, damn.

Good coincidence that other people report this as well. I’ve uploaded some save games which crash me to the desktop when the described actions are followed, can anyone download them and verify they also get a CTD?

http://alexandervanloon.nl/rajputs.sav → Solanki Rajputs, end turn and the garrison in Ajmer will sally
http://alexandervanloon.nl/roman_empire.sav → Roman Empire, attack Sinop
http://alexandervanloon.nl/abbasid.sav → Abbasid Caliphate, attack Antioch

    • The time at which a crash during siege or sally occurs varies, sometimes it happens at the first city I besiege in a campaign, sometimes it happens rather late. I haven’t seen a single crash though with my Makuria campaign which is relatively long now.
    • It seems like crashes occur with every faction eventually.
    • I’ve had a lot of successful sieges and sallies without crashes.
    • The crashes in the save games are always reproducible for me.
    • Field battles never give a crash.
    • I’m using Windows 7 RC and the latest English version of Broken Crescent, 2.02.
    • @EarendilElenthol: All I have installed is Stainless Steel, which uses a subdirectory in /mods AFAIK.
    • Vanilla M2TW and Kingdoms play fine and never crash with me.

I will upload a log file later. I’d really appreciate a fix. I just got out of debt with the Solanki Rajputs and ready to steamroll the rest of the world with my elephants, the crashes with their campaign are really killing me!

I started a game as the Romans, saved the game, and after sieging a rebel town, they sallied... I have tried this battle three times now and it crashes all the time. I have the newest patch and I have reinstalled everything and tried that after the second turn Seems that this bug cant allow me to play this fine mod

For me it's something weird, every settlement I attack seems to miss the ground textures and then CTD, I had it for Rusichi and BC when I installed reconquista, but with a freshh install of MTW and only BC and Rusichi I have no problems with Rusichi but still the problems for BC. I do know I didnt have them before as the Abbasids still give the problem on towns I conquered with a sally forth the first turn. Again reinstalling

After my first installation of broken crescent and patching it to 2.02, whenever I would try to fight out my siege battles instead of auto resolving the battle, the game would load for a small while and right then, the screen goes black and the mouse cursor retains the loading hourglass animation as though the game is functioning appropriately (although obviously it isnt).
I reinstalled m2tw, then the kingdoms expansion, afterwards I installed broken crescent 2.0 in the vanila folder and I also patched it again to 2.02. It must be noted that Im using the game via steam, during my first installation, I installed and patched the game in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war\mods. I thought that perhaps I installed the game wrong, however after reinstalling everything and this time, installing the mod and patching it in
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war, following the instructions in the sticky steam threads in the forum and also making sure that the patch 2.02 installation deleted certain files (map.rwm etc), however, trying to fight my siege battles still causes the exact same crash. The crash doesnt allow me to minimize the mod to terminate it, but instead Im forced to restart my pc. This problem prevents me from playing a normal campaign in broken crescent, battles in open terrain work just fine though.
I do not believe this issue has anything to do with steam.
Unless everyone who is experiencing this issue have steam, which I dont think everyone do.

This crash seems to be following the people with Kingdoms installed. The mod is designed around the MTW2 version fo the game, so I would try installing only the MTW2+patches for MTW2... then BC+patch...then try the mod.

Only think I can think of it is boiling oil, which is present int he Kingdoms version of the game, but not int he BC. If the game tries to use it, I can see why it would crash.

Thank you for replying Strelac. Instead of removing Kingdoms, would using the Kingsdoms Edition (sticky thread in this subforum) perhaps prevent the crashes from happening, as that version is adapted to Kingdoms?

By the way, has anyone who apparently has the ‘right’ installation of the game tried my save games, and verified if they crashed? I’d like to know if the crashes are ‘embedded’ in my save games or not?

I think it has nothing to do with the Kingdoms installed or not - I always have Kingdoms installed, and I play BC along with TATW without any issues of incompatibility between BC and Kingdoms. I don't think there's a way for BC to confuse files... But, who knows... Also, current BC Kingdoms Edition is wrongly patched. So, just uninstall Kingdoms and try BC with bare M2TW. If it will work, then you will know what caused CTD. If not, install Kingdoms and wait for new BC for Kingdoms edition, I think it will be released quite soon.

Yes, I did. Are they from Broken Crescent Kingdoms Edition? I've loaded only one - Rajput one, but on BC Kingdoms Edition, and played the battle without any CTDs. I took Ajmer. But I've meddled much with my BC for M2TW installation, so the save don't want to load there.

wudang_clown, my save games were saved during the use of the normal M2TW version.

However, somehow since I’ve been using the Kingdoms Edition, the siege crashes have disappeared. Haven’t seen any crash during a relatively long campaign with the Solanki Rajputs so far. With the Ghorids I did encounter a freeze during a siege battle, but that was during the battle itself and not the loading.

Strange, I have finished a flawless Ghorid campaign without any CTD till 1280 , then an Armenian campaign (which i lost :/) with no ctd. And now started a KoJ campaign where i have constant ctd's when i play a siege battle, they happen when i am 5-10 minutes in the battle. I have a suspicion this only happens with generals (a.o Barbarosa) the pope sends to crusade, their generals bodyguards are also different then the ones from Jerusalem, regular knights.
I will try to find some info on how to log the error report, cause i forgot how to do that.
Why is such information not stickied here?

    edit:

OK here is the system.log file from the main folder.

I have the Kingdoms expansion installed but not the Kingdoms mod.

    edit2:

I also tried show_err command line in the short-cut, but it showed nothing. I guess i'll have to wait for a Kingdoms release cause i do not plan to uninstal Kingdoms as i run also other mods that require it.
