it is not like a total war game, it only reminds of it. the campaign is real time, you can't directly control battles, you move one province at a time, there is a different diplomacy, goverment types, the war AI socks, it makes stupid decisions, the recruitment is different, you have national policies and national ideas, you can recruit generals and admirals, the agent system is different, there are many more types of espionage, rebellions...

    TW has nothing on EU3

In contrast to the efforts of tiny Israel to make contributions to the world so as to better mankind, one has to ask what have those who have strived to eliminate Israel from the face of the earth done other than to create hate and bloodshed.

The two games could not be more different. Paradox games as a generality cater more to hard core stategy type fans. The battles in EU3 for example are abstract as opposed to the TW games where you control your troops against that marvelous TW Battlefield AI.
However, there is still plenty of strategy involved for battles. Terrain, troop types, generals, and a host of other modifiers that one can use to their advantage in battle or get creamed because of them.

As for campaign AI. IMO, there is just flat out no comparison. There is no one way to play EU games. One can play as a trading, war-mongering, colonial, imperial nation...etc...with an actual varying diplomatic and governmental strategy to be used depending on how you want to play. TW games do not have this. It's just merely about....well.....war.

    Is it more fun?
Don't get me wrong. I love TW games and own them all and will in all likelihood continue to buy their titles in the future. However, if i were stuck on island and could only choose to play either EU3/IN or any Total War title. I'll take EU3/IN hands down with no hesitation.

Judging by your user name. I suspect you would probably enjoy EU3 with it's expansions. Viva La Revolucion!!

EU3 is far more focused on diplomacy and dynastic things than TW is. It doesn't do war as well as TW, but the AI is far more sensible, and I personally find it much more challenging. Just yesterday I actually lost a campaign () as Brandenburg! I don't remember I lost so much as a battle in a TW game...

Besides, EU3 lets you be any nation in the world from any time between 1453 and 1780-something. Its far more epic than TW
