    Default Protectorate

    I never fully understood this part of diplomacy. It means your allied, but furthermore...?

    What are the differences between protectorates and the usual allies.
    What are the advantages and disadvantages (if there are any?:hmmm to "protect" someone?
    And pros and cons for being protected?

    thanx

    if you become a pretectoratee then you are weak and could not kill off an army you should of allied with lol.

    Differences;
    All money will go towards the pretectorate.
    Pretectorate will aid you usually by sending soldiers over to protect you.

    So in my game with the macedons illyria is my protectorate, so all the income from their settlements will go to me?

    Actually, as far as I'm aware, if faction A is a protectorate to faction B, A is allied to B and they have mutual trade rights and military access and that's it. I've never seen any occurrence of money from the protectorate going to the "protecting" faction or of any military assistance back and forth. So, no, unfortunately I don't think you'll get any of Illyria's money if they're your protectorate :-(

    So i'm protecting them from the romans who are swarming into the Balkan withOUT getting anything from them

    Is there any chance that Illyria brakes free from me? Currently i have enough garrisons there, but if i need them somewhere else and take them away, illyria is free to rebel against me then?

    Yep, it's pretty much a one way street as far as benefits go. They can, and very likely will, stab you in the back as soon as they think you're weak enough, even if they're still getting their butts kicked by Rome.

    You can get the AI to give you money for all sorts. Quite often I get war/peace/war/peace with both Greece and Carthage. They're the ones always offering ceasefires so I make a counter offer of ceasefire, trade rights and demand anything upto 3000denarii. Mostly they will accept it and then betray the deal just one or two turns later, enabling you to get more money out of them when they come back asking for another peace deal.

    On topic, Protectorates seem a bit useless to me. If it was one faction offering a certain amount of money for protection then it would be a useful and cool part of the game. Unfortunately it just seems to mean a temporary alliance which one faction breaks just a few years later, completely pointless.

    I use protectorates for geo-politics. To clarify: I accept protectorates offers from the Black Death or the Romans or whichever faction becomes too powerful, in exchange for a hefty amount of money or territory, so that they become a bit more weakened. they attack imediately afterwards again anyway. I also make sure my bank account is close to overdraft, to make sure they don't get too much of my hard labour.
