    Default Unlocking soldiers.

Hello I recently started playing HRE, and I'm currently the strongest, richest and most advanced faction in the world, yet I'm still on Spear Militia, Crossbow Militia and Mounted Sergeants. I've got 2 fortresses and 5 castles, I've upgraded everything I can in all of them, all there's left to upgrade is some Chapels and Trade/Farming buildings in one of the fortresses. Almost every faction but me has unlocked knights, Feudal Knights, mailed knights etc. How do I get these soldiers? What do I have to accomplish?

As you can see in the pic, everything but peasants and militia are greyed out.. To build an army I have to spend thousands on mercenaries cause my peasants and militia are too bad for combat.

That's mighty odd. Are you playing some mod or did you edit anything yourself? Mailed Knights are normally available with a wooden castle, let alone a fortress. Perhaps it's some bug but I haven't heard of it before. Have you installed all the patches?

upgrading is based on population of the castle, What are the pop's of your castles? the highest level.

Did you say you were playing SS 6.1 somewhere else?? If you are did you download the extra recruitment mods? Those would keep you from recruiting elite units unless you keep a war council member in the castle for a certain amount of turns.

Ok here are the pops, I forgot I made one of the fortresses to a large town cause it was way overseas.

    Hamburg has 10k~
    Metz 5k~
    Stauffen 6k~
    Bern 6k~
    Innsbruck 4k~

I am using a mod called Stainless Steel, but even in vanilla I had the same issue.
Anoither thing worth mentioning is that I can see all available soldiers, but they're greyed out, and when I mouseover them it says "Available in 4 turns" etc. But it's been on 4 turns for say 50 turns. Never changes..

Crap that might be the problem jsktrogdor.. I did add the extra recruitment mod I think. Do you think I can still keep my save after I reinstalled SS?

The mods in the 6.1 patch are Real combat real recruitment, bygs grim reality 2, permanent arrows, remove bygs army supply.

    Which ones should I take?

What faction are you? You could try playing as a different faction and see iff they get better units.
Jon had taken Donal and Benjen’s advice to heart: Sam may be fat and pathetic, but he is still a member of the watch, and one of the few black brothers who isn't a rapist or thief. (out of context, this sounds ridiculously racist)

I already played as teutonic order, hre and england in SS and had the same problems with all of them.

But I think it's like the other guy said, that the 6.1 patch added the recruitment thing. I'll just skip all of the extra mods from 6.1 this time and see.

I reinstalled SS, removed all old files except saves, and chose the permanent arrows and "Remove byg 2's army supply" mods in the patch, but it STILL doesn't work..

ing hell this is starting to piss me off, I moved both my emperor and my prince (war council member) into my fortress, and everything but peasants and peasent xbowmen are greyed out. I'll take a screenshot and upload it here.

next time edit your posts into one post instead of triple posting man...

I mean its fine if you post it a day later but... an hour? man...

so, anyway, your game is messed up, so re install it and if it works on vanilla you know the mod is not for you.

    Sorry for the triple post.

Anyway, I think I got it working now, I waited 4-5 turns with the war council member in the castle and now I can recruit Mounted Sergeant and Sergeant Spearmen, 11 turns left for knights

Its one of the extra mods, I think its real recruitment. I had the same problem and got really tired of it so I just reinstalled without any of the bonus mods, just plain SS 6.1.

Yeah I'm thinking of starting fresh, I did that first but I copied the saves too, but as you've seen it still doesn't work.. The saves must have installed the missing mods when I started the game or something like that. So, I'm thinking of going with a new faction while I'm on it anyway, can't be bothered to expand my mighty reich all over again. Is Venice fun?

You know I have an egyptian campaign, I started it with the extra mods. When I got tired of the mods I just reinstalled, didnt uninstall didnt do anything special just started the instalation again without the old mods and the game was still playable. I still have the save sitting around, totaly playable without any of the old mods.

Hmm, weird.. I didn't manage to get it working so now I'm reinstalling the whole game instead, some files must've gotten corrupted after all the reinstallation etc. My uninstall file for SS didn't work so I had to remove it manually, without cleaning the register ofc. So everything got messed up. I hope I'll get it working after I reinstalled, don't think I'm going to touch those saves again.. We'll see.
