Default Should Russia enter the EU in the next 30 years?

Some Russians on this site have suggested that it would be a good idea for Russia to join the EU at some point in the future. My opinion is that they can when hell freezes over. I think that the popular mood before the Georgia war was bad enough and since then its got much worse. I really do not think that the EU has anything to gain (except fuel) from allowing a semi dictatorial, economically underdeveloped, aggressive country into the EU and giving it the huge voting power it would get due to its size.

Obviously Russia might become a proper democracy and might become more westernized so its possible that it could one day join the EU therefore I have added the cavet 'within the next 30 years' to the question. I think it would be a good indicator about how unpopular Russia really is in Europe - something that has nothing to do with the actions of the USA.

Please can you only vote in the poll if you live in a EU country.

    Short unser - YES
Long unser - Russia will have to work to improve it's infrastucture, battle the corruption and do anything is required to enter as all countries did.
No Russia will not have a bigger word to say in the EU Elrond,Germany has the biggest population but still has only the same voting power as UK and France for balance reasons i think this will be applied for Russia too.
10 years ago Russia was like a drunked old man know it's like a teenager who knows what will happen in 30 years but they must be given the chance to try.
EU citizens only please we need to see how many hate Russia.

Can they? Should means they have the ability to do so, but can they? I doubt it.

I may think Russia hasn't changed at all within the past 80 some years, but I think the EU would make them ten times worse. Not because they would screw it up, but because the EU would screw them up. Please Russia, for your safety, stay away from the EU. It is evil.

It would be best thing for Russia. They`re part of European civilization since XVIII century unlike Turkeyfor example. And of course they have capacity to do so if they want it. On the other side I don`t think that EU can accept country that big into full membership.

It will destroy the East-West bloc. Some might actually compare it to irelands acceptance. But this will do wonders for the EU and Europe as a whole, Hopefully.

Definately a yes; except I don't think Russia would even want to join EU...

By the way, I feel a bit disappointed that Russia did not invade Georgia (and spare it so easily)...

Bad timing for this post, unless you do not, never have, and never will approve of the Russian Federation.

Realisticly -- Turkey will enter the EU first. Take this information as you wish.

EU was created to have a front against the Russian influence. It would be against the reason EU was created.

We are not the ones randomly invading countries and spend 4% of our GDP for the armed forces.A unipolar world is unbalaned and the past is irelevant at this point because we learn form our mistakes.

No, that was NATO, EU was created to make European countries richer and more influential after they lost their colonies.

As for the question itself... Not in next 30 years, me thinks. Though I have always seen Russia's acceptance into EU as a final step in unifying Europe. But that can't happen as long as both Russia and EU are trying and claiming to be superpowers. And neither of them knows how to treat someone as an equal, they are both trying to dominate in politics, as any big and powerful country has tried since the dawn of time.

no. EU was created to consolide European influence vs American.

and yes, I believe Russia should enter European Union if given the chance. but I dont think neither Russia nor Europe is ready for this step (more in political sence than economical).
