Default Having black skin is a no-no. You better be fair and hansome if you want to be successful

We have known for quite some time that India is the most disgustingly racist and discriminating nation on the face of the earth. Among Indian woman, the fact is the lighter their skin colour the more successful they will be.

But over the last 2-3 years Indian has seen an explosion in sales of a skin lightening cream specifically aimed at men called "Fair and Handsome." In the televising ad for it a dark skinned male is shown. He is unhappy because none of the girls like him. But then he uses the product, his skin becomes lighter and suddenly he becomes a babe magnet.

Indian men are going mad over this product, and it's not just India. This product is seeing growing sales figures in Europe as well.

Why is this allowed? Surely governments should be fighting against such prejudice instead of allowing companies to exploit it to make money.

The product should at least be banned in Europe.

Yeh, lets stop white people going on holiday for a tan while we're at it!!

It's racism against pasty Europeans i tells ya!!!

P.S: btw this is actually a wide practise all over asia. I've heard of it being particulary popular in Malaysia too.

It's mostly sad Tribalism or the Caste system in India.

Lightness of skin is seen as sign of beauty in pretty much all of Asia.

What? You sound like a crackpot.

    Not really the same thing.

among woman it has been a widely used practice for generations, but not among men.

This is why the developments are so worrying. You would think that, with this being the 21st century and all, such prejudices would be slowly losing their hold on people, instead of becoming even more deeply ingrained.

But that is not what the sales of this Fair and Handsome cream show. It actually shows that wealthy, educated young Indians are buying this crap, because they have been convinced that in order to be successful their skin needs to be as light as possible.

Has been the same in the West. But mens beauty products are a booming industry in the West now.

In fact that men are concentrating more on their looks is a sign that things are progressing!

What exactly do you think the whole Billion dollar fake tanning industry is all about?

    Dark skin = more attractive

In the West the rational being that it covers blemishes better.

So I should feel ashamed of being more popular among Asian women due to me being a European?...

In Indonesia its the same. As they say the neighbor's grass is always greener.

this type of thing in India can be dated back since the Aryan Invasion of the North, so please dont get your European PC thing into this. Its just how their culture is.

you can might as well say that The Ramayana is racist. (if you know what it is)

"Its just their culture" is not an excuse. In Europe and America they had slaves, it was a part of their culture. Not any more. They grew up, or perhaps because its fine and dandy seeing as its "just culture" we should all just be racist?

So dark skin people want to be more light skinned and light skinned people spend alot of time trying to get a tan. Point of this thread other then mindless hysteria? Next thing you know you'll be attacking black people for straightening their hair or white women for injecting crap in their lips for bigger, fuller lips.

it is different, thats just how they think good looking people from the same race should look like. I dont see many freckled-face pasty red heads becoming poossy magnets in the West either.

Yup, make getting suntanned illegal and say it is a racist endeavor. Even dark skinned people get suntans, and sunburnt.

Skin lightening and darkening endeavors by humans have been around for ages. Nothing new.

It's also funny and stupid to a great degree, as in a 2nd degree or so sunburn.

Maybe we should seed the clouds in the Winters and produce blue snow, then everyone will want to blue their skin with woad or whatever and become one of those cool Blue Smurfs or whatever.

Personally, I would like to be colored purple, like a Purple People Eater (in an old song) without the associated cannabilastic traits/attributes. Turkey and buffalo burgers and venison are good enougn for me.

So Medi Rapper, why are you not making a thread decrying the British government not banning fake tan lotion, or sun beds?

    Not really the same thing.
Actually it is. The only reason why you say it is different is because those guys want to get lighter while we are trying to get darker and that is messed up according to your notion of races.

What exactly is the difference? They are trying to get lighter while we are trying to get darker and will end up with basically the same tone... How come it is discusting on their part and isn't discusting on our part?

This is why the developments are so worrying. You would think that, with this being the 21st century and all, such prejudices would be slowly losing their hold on people, instead of becoming even more deeply ingrained.
Yes, this prejudice against what is considered ugly in a certain timeframe has to go... In the renaissance they liked fat women and now we shun them... Terribly discriminating on our part.

In case you haven't noticed, this issue isn't about race. Indians are basically all the same race. If the fashionable skin colour is whiter they they use stuff to make it happen. In the west people go to solariums just to get darker. Discusting and about prejudice too?!

Actually indians are not all the same race, there are the pure Aryan ones as well and they are the "prestigeous race", CASTE system in Sanskrit is called Varna. Varna means color/skin, it was actually meant to separate Aryans from local dark-skinned Dravidians. This discrimination later became separations between social classes as the pitch-blacks and the aryans mixed more and more. But still, its their culture, if you dont like it, then suck it, you cannot change it.

Let the invisible hand of business do its work; if there's a market for it, there's a market for it. To try banning it would be authoritarian.
