    Default Varangian Guards

    Ok so started Ive notice on my campaign with Byzantium Empire that the Varangian Guards are well, weak. So I made a custom game. Varangian Guards vs. Dismounted Fuedal Knights. The knights won with 30 Knights still alive. I was just shocked to see the Varangian Guards just get mauled by Knights that you can get very early in the game. So is there like a patch or something were I can fix this?

    Wow. I always thought of Varangians as strong unit.

    Set up a mod switch (don't have link handy) and edit export_descr_unit.txt yourself to make 'em tougher if you want. You're right, they're notably weaker than they were in MTW.

    varangian guard is a 2-handed axmen unit, thus it should not be treated like regular infantry but like cavalry on foot, used for shock attacks, rear attacks, and outflanking

    Do their abilities reflect this role? Do they have the "fast moving" trait? Or have a higher charge bonus than dismounted fuedal knights? Perhaps they're a bargain, how much do they cost/upkeep? I ask because what keeps dismounted f. knights from fulfilling this same role?

    I'm at work so can't quite check this.

    to answer part of your question, its the charge bonus...thats about it
    if i recall varangian charge: 9, DFK charge: 3
    besides, when are 2h axe units fast moving?

    varangians should be better then all the other units of heavy infantry.

    in vanilla, all units pretty much suck...try mods, and you will se the wrath of the varangians ( JUST WON A BATTLE with 4(units) varangians that pounded 9(units) dismounted hospitallers, and it was slaughter, though my varangians did have full exp)

    darn, it's me own personal thing though, in SS 6.0, they're pretty good

    yeah the byzantine infantry in MTW were INSANE but in mtw 2 they are just ordinary

    They seem to work fine in Retrofit. They are the only unit which can defeat Scots Noble Pikemen in a head-on, 0ne-to-one fight (in my vast experience).

    2h swords units are overpowered while 2h axe units are underpowered, cause of their slow animation speed.
