we owe them the brunt of all our biological research; we owe them the advancement made by the millions and millions of lab rats and mice which serve to enlighten us about the base nature of the organic structure and how it reacts to various tests and processes; all medicine begins with mice, all science of that nature begins with them as well.

We use them because they are easy to breed, and because they are plentiful. They are still vermin, and deserve to be treated as such. I always get out my hatchet whenever I see a rodent in my house, or I will let my cats have a go if they are around.

While I agree that we should be grateful to animals who have suffered in order to help us, even if they did it both unwittingly and unwilingly, I don't think we should respect something simply because it provides us with knowlege. Hurricanes and earthquakes in built up areas provide us with a lot of knowlege about, for instance, structural integrity of effected buildings, but I'm not going to do anything other than despise them. Hell, sociopaths give us important information about adaptive technique forming in psychologically abnormal individuals. Doesn't mean you gotta like them.
