Default Coming back to MTW & SS mod - many questions

First I'd like to just express my joy that SS 6.1 is out. I know it's been a few months for many of you but I'm coming back to MTW after about 6 or 7 months of not playing it.

I've installed SS 6.0 + 6.1 patch update, however, I also read that CA released an official 1.5 patch. I have 1.3 installed currently and SS 6.1 seems to run just fine with that patch. Do I still need to install it?

I also noticed that along with 6.1 came a few mods. The two that I chose were the Real Combat & Real Recruitment mod, and Byg's Grim Reality mod. I've also installed the hotfix for Byg's mod.

Now I'm wondering what else I need to install in order to start a proper campaign. Are there any other highly recommended patches or hotfixes that fix bugs?

I also stumbled upon the SSTC 1.2 mod. Is this a recommended mod? It seems there are a lot of steps one needs to take to install it. Is it worth the effort?

I started a campaign with Kingdom of Jerusalem just to get the feeling of SS mod again. I noticed a strange thing, none of the settlements seem to have any of the units at free upkeep. For example Jerusalem boasts huge walls and can have 6 free upkeep units but there's no indication that any of the units currently in the city are free, even though these units are some standard militia types. Is this in any way connected with the RC+RR mod or Byg's mod?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm really eager to get back into this game after so long. Seems like its been years since I've visited these forums. It's confusing now since there seem to be countless new mods and hotfixes everywhere. I just want to get an idea of what I need before starting a grand campaign.

    Thanks

you could also try looking for the most recent Lusted campaign and battle AI. BGR does have some strage effects like that but it is a very interesting mod not for the faint hearted, lol.

Nah, you should be fine with what you have there, beware however as it is a lot harder than vanilla

moosey, thanks for your reply. Not worried that it's harder than vanilla since I've played SS5.1 before.

So is it recommended that BGR is not used because of the so called strange effects? What about the Real Combat + Real Recruitment mod that comes with 6.1 patch?

I'd like to know regarding the official 1.5 patch. Is it required in order for SS6.1 to work properly or was the mod designed to work with the 1.3 patch?

The AOR Colonies mod. Is that already included in SS6.0 or needs to be installed separately?

After reading the Perfectly Polished (PP) mod thread and it seems that there's some conflict with using the SSTC mod and the 2 turns per year mod that comes with PP. Is this still the case or are they compatible now?

Is it possible to just install RR without installing Grim Reality III in order to be able to use the SSTC mod? I ask because I couldn't find an answer on the SSTC thread.

im running my game from a basic kingdoms install so you should be alright without the extra patch. I would recommend using BGR, it puts a whole new spin on things and makes it an almost completely different game, give it a go with knights templar. but after a while i found it a bit complicated to manage so i reverted back to SS 6.1 + RR. I havent played SSTC yet and Perfectly polished does look very good but im in the middle of an AAR right now so will wait until i finish it before i download more mods.

Thanks for your help moosey, I appreciate it. I think I'm going to give it a go with SS 6.1 and RR. I read a bit more about GBR and while it sounds interesting, I don't really want to be too complicated or overwhelming after not playing this game for many months.

Have you tried the Crimson Tide mod?
