    Default Crusades?

    I am playing as the Danes now, after about 25 turns a Crusade has not been called. I was rather expecting one to be called by now, I know I can call one, but really contented in taking as many settlement around the Baltic, just now. Do the Crusades happen at different times with different factions?
    As anyone ever been successful with the Danes on Crusade in the Holyland? They certainly have a long journey and probably the Crusade is usually finished by the time you get there.

    I was playing as Templar, gave it up, too flaming hard for sure, but I will give it ago again.

    The crusades to happen at different times, but it's not due to the faction you're playing.

    I'd imagine that as the Danes, you'd have to join the crusade pretty damn quickly after it's called if you want to get to the Middle East first. Probably be best to get to the Mediterranean as soon as possible and then hire some mercenary ships to give your armies a boost.

    if you want a quick crusade it might be worth taking a mediteranean island as a staging ground. if you take rhodes or cyprus then you can crusade quickly

    Crusades happen randomly and doesn't really matter what faction you play. Just make sure that you sand more then one general to led your units on a Crusade. In case that one of them gets killed the other one will take charge. Ans in the meantime he will get valuable experience.

    Also, playing as Denmark going to the holy land is not an issue, they have one of the strongest unit rosters in the game. Because you are gonna start from the north, land route is the best. Take the road through the central Europe and cross the Dardanelles or bosphorus without upsetting the Byzantines.

    From there you will proceed through Anatolia and you can surly expect clashes with the Turks. Once you pass Antioch you in the holy land and just proceed towards your target.

    Good Luck.

    I would have to say that you should go out of your way to upset these orthodox Byzantines! You are a viking, pillage is in your blood! When I was playing Norway I stopped by Constantinople on the way to Antioch, sacked and plundered the big city, destroyed all buildings for the cash and gave it to the Pope, got perfect relationships with him and a huge war chest, used the money to stack up on mercs and kept going; and there was a lot of catholic lands between me and them they were not going to get thru any time soon...

    Now that is a good idea, an island staging post from where I can smash, grab and plunder the Viking way and at the same time get some good settlements.

    Go for Crete, because Cyprus will rebel a lot. You will surly loose it if you don't have a massive garrison stationed there.

    Not Crete, its probaby too far, how about you buy a piece of land (pref Castle ofcourse) off the Byzantines, be sure your good friends with them, and stage from there? Rhodes is always an option too- but it's practically the same distance from Crete to the Holy Land anyway.

    Diplomacy, select option "make demand" > "give region" and then offer let's say "15,000 Florins" in exchange...

    Did you take the land route or by sea?
    It certainly seems that the Danes have some very good units and are well equipped to take on any adversary. You get really good Mercenaries too in Northern Europe.
    Apparently I have too eliminate HRE at some point, that should be fun.

    What I did was a little bit tricky but it works. Take two generals and 7 units and join crusade. Walk thru Northern Europe down to Venice, but split one of the generals off by himself. Once he has the cross, he can recruit, and by the time you hit Venice he has crusader knights, spearmen and unmounted knights. You have a strong strong stack tha has 0 upkeep. If you split off a group of the knights and kill some rebels on the way, you can often get a Man of the Hour announcement and have a 3rd general who can recruit more. If you roll in to any territory with 3 stacks you pretty much own it. Get it, destroy city, destroy buildings and give city to Pope or anyone else you want perfect relationships with. Actually you can often trade the city and some of the money you just earned for a city bordering one of yours and expand in your home territory for free.

    Just be sure to dump all the crusader units and mercs when the crusade is over, the upkeep on those units is prohibitive...

    If you're playing with the Danes anyway, you might want to redirect some Crusade traffic to the north. The HRE is prone to excommunication, so chances are you'll be able to request some holy journeys on Frankfurt and break the Kaiser's might early on. A Crusade on Vilnius is another easy way to secure your holdings across the Baltic, as it will surely dent the pagan hordes of the Lithuanian duke.

    cyprus can be easily kept under control, it just takes a bit of work to bring lots of priests with you (which of course you should always do on a crusade to any areas with a different religion. THere will be a large upset over distance to capital but if you have a good law increasing general (which of course you should always send youre most lawful general on faraway crusades) to keep the settlement happy and keep corruption down.

    Nice idea, with the Priests, makes alot of sense. What is the score with Generals running out of Supplies, whilst making there way to Crusade target?
    I really want to use Longboats to go, but I guess rather dangerous if I get mauled by pirates and end up loosing the fleet and army?
    I remember to take two generals so I can grow my forces on the way and try to recruit as many Viking Mercenaries and Macemen before I leave.

    I tend to send quite crappy generals and family members on "the most holiest of journeys", because the rewards of a succesful crusade usually turn a retard that calls itself a general into a more useful branch in your family tree.

    The key to the templars is that you hold out for 30 turns and keep peace with the turks...U will use both crusades during that time, one for Jerusalem, the other for GAza....It gets too easy after that...

    In SS, I usually split my empire in two, ot three parts. let's say I'm playing with England...The other two parts of my empire are (part 1)Constantinople, Nicaea and Adrianople (slowly taking over every byzantine settlement, and (part2), the nile region...Cairo, Damietta, Alexandria, Gaza. yOU CAN DO THIS IN 30 TURNS...yOU WILL START A CRUSADE, but you go to constantinople instead of the holy land...15 turns later, you start another crusade from constantinople, cos your'e very close...Then you can go conquer the aliens

    IActually there is a way to make Crusades happen sooner - even though they are random - (I think this works anyway)

    Go into your descr_campaign_db.xml file and find this;

    " <crusades>
    <required_jihad_piety int="5"/>
    <max_disband_progress float="20.0"/>
    <near_target_no_disband_distance float="4.0"/>
    <disband_progress_window float="3"/>
    <crusade_called_start_turn float="31"/>
    <jihad_called_start_turn float="33"/>
    <movement_points_modifier float="2.5"/>
    </crusades>"

    Then change the "Crusade_called_start_turn float" to something early like 5 - default for SS is 15 which means the crusade will be called any time after 15 turns. If you change it to 1 then the crusade will be called any time after the first turn - which gives you more chance =]

    Hope this helps

    Actually it kept rebelling against me until I had no more capable troops left to fight the Greek rebels. I had to send reinforcements from Crete. I had no spare ones, because earlier I send them to try and occupy Iconicum in the central Anatolia.
