    Default Live or die for another?

    Its the night of Sunady the 14th april 1912. Your a passenger on board the Titanic and its rapidly in the proccess of sinking. People scatter around you in all directions confused, and awe-struck. You clamor up to the lifeboats and are told there are not enough seats for everyone, you must either take a seat on board one of the few boats, or sacrifice your life for the sake of an unknown stranger. What would you do? (You do not know who the person is that you'll save)

    I actually found a similar topic like this on another forum...

    I certainly would find myself a seat rather than sacrificing my life for someone whom I don't even know. If the person is my relative, than I might sacrifice my life for he/she

    Anyone know the science behind that?
    I forgot which scientist said it but it was;

    I would not put my life down for one brother, but I would for 2, or 8 cousins

    It's simple maths, you work it out and it will make it basic that if you do that chances are your gene will be passed on (50% chance your brother has the same gene of kindness, 12.25% chance a cousine does). Clever isn't it?

    As for the question - think about it. Firstly, everyone would be runnign onto the ships, nobody would be standing. You'd get swept up in the crowd. Secondly, if you gave up your place it would probably be to some rich person (look at the percentage of those who escaped were 1st class - I think it's on wikipedia).

    But if you took those features away, or say I was there, halfway through my life and with no one dependant on me, and it was a senario where there was one more space, and there was two people left, me and say either a son (whos fathers on the lifeboat) or father (who's son is on the lifeboat) or lover (who's other love is on the lifeboat), then I'd definately give it up. Imagine firstly how their lives would be, one stuck on the lifeboat, to live in guilt and sadness for the rest of their lives, the other left to die. Or, imagine your own feelings of guilt, which for me would stay with me for the rest of my life. In that case I would give up my seat.

    But seeing this is to a stranger, and say you don't nesersairily have to be swept up or trampled by the crowds, then I'm uncertain. I would probably take the seat.

    Well, it is an emergency situation, so normal moral rules do not apply. I would of course choose the seat to save my own life. In times of emergency, we must protect our values-be it ourselves, as in this situation, or those whom we deeply value and love (such as a spouse or a child).

    If giving up my life for another means a free pass to that "Heaven" place (If it's there), I'll do it.

    I'd sacrifice myself and earn a 1'st class ticket to heaven.

    I'd figure out who looked like the least likely to survive a long stay at sea with no food on the lifeboat, and then vehemently insist that it be THEY who gives up the seat to the stranger. Incidentally this will make them look like an ass, and be more likely to save whoever this stranger is (because I ain't movin unless they shoot me)

    In those days for a man to save himself before a woman would have been disgraceful. He would probably be beaten and thrown into the sea for trying it. So I guess I would have, for a female.

    But it makes you think.....what if she was some selfish self-absorbed nagging bloody.....

    Just do what I do. On long sea voyages, I always pack a large dress, stiletto heels and a long blonde wig.

    I let the person in and then push them off the lifeboat just for laughs.

    Not only would I take the seat, I'd be the first to reccomend that we eat whoever is the fattest assuming we run out of food at sea.
