So I'm playing as France on VH/VH SS 6.1. A quick background synopsis to better explain the situation:
I've conquered most of France, except for the southern provinces bordering the Mediterranean which have been taken by Aragon, who I have a marriage alliance with.
In the north, the Scottish and the Norwegians landed early on at Antwerp, while the English landed at Bruges, and there has been a constant power struggle. I allied with the Scotland and let them take Bruges, but the English returned there. I sent an army and besieged the town only to be threatened with excommunication from the Pope for any aggressive behavior toward Christians for 7 turns.
SO I turned my attention to the east. The Pope declared a Crusade on Frankfurt, and everyone joined in, including myself. I didn't dare attack the HRE earlier, because the leaderboard told me that they were overwhelmingly powerful. Frankfurt was quickly conquered by the Spanish, leaving about 7 ex-crusading armies at war with the HRE roaming around Germany.
Now here is the curious part. I remember in Medieval I that civil wars could happen. I toggled_fow to see what the map look liked, and about half of the HRE provinces are rebel-controlled now. It's complete chaos. There are foreign armies everywhere, mixed with a few lingering HRE stacks and noble-run rebel armies. I can't tell whether or not this happened because a ex-crusading countries conquered province and let it rot into rebellion, or whether the HRE has had a civil war.
I don't recall ever seeing a civil war take place in my faction while I was playing, then again I've played too many campaigns to remember anything. Can civil wars happen? Can a big strong empire like the HRE just suddenly crumble? I have never had trouble with my generals' loyalties. I would relish the challenge that a civil war would bring. So... do civil wars exist, and how can I instigate them?
Any other campaign advice welcome, particularly of a financial kind.
