Default Wal Mart Instructs Employees to NOT Vote Democrat

    http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/08...emocratic-win/

    And that was from FOX.

What the hell is this? People are suffering because they can't unionize and big corporations are making out like bandits, not just Wal Mart, but insurance companies, health care providers, and every kind of financial institution.

What does it mean when a company will try and get its employees to VOTE a certain way?

How is this different then Unions pushing their members to vote Democrat?

No they force you to give them some of your hard earned money instead even if you dont want to join. My point is unions push their members to go vote for the guy the union endorses and Walmart is pushing in the opposite direction. In the end both are working towards self interest...so how is one bad but not the other? Im fine with both, I just dont see targeting one that just started to do this is worse then one that has been doing it for decades. In the end however people are going to cast their vote themselves regardless of unions or Walmart...because they will be voting for THEIR self interest.

Which is a good reason to be against (American) unions, but that's another discussion.

I have no problem with anyone endorsing a certain candidate and then trying to convince others to vote one way or the other.

IMO the only bad thing Wall-mart does is making those meeting MANDATORY.
As in: "we are going to put you in a room and you HAVE to listen to our arguments, or you will loose your job."

Well that is fair enough argument and one I agree with you about. Its not like Im cheering Walmart here its just in the grand scheme of things I dont see any meaningful difference between what they are trying to do as opposed to what is already done by other entities. That is to say both are wrong/screwed up etc.

    Or sign their paycheques?

We are forgetting a little too quickly one side, the corporations, and their less than saintly ways are being upheld by the current laws, and unions, the other side, cannot even form to speak out about labor rights.

What is the percentage of those in unions now compared to thirty or fifty years ago?

The United Auto Workers is at 23% as opposed to 51% in 1981.

The only union that has grown has been the AFL-CIO, they comprise of police, sheriffs, firefighters, and gambling surveillance experts, and it's at 39%.

Funny since those were the people who put down violently union protests not even a century ago...

Unions by and large have lost their way. Not just because it is so much harder for them to come together and fight for labor rights and equal rights of employees and workers... but because the ones that are left SUCK ASS!

They are corrupt and look out only for themselves. So the unions have two huge problems, the first is that corporate America is winning. The second is that many of them that still exist are decadent money-holes.

Except there is no way that your employer can find out how you voted unless you tell them.

    Find me a union, then.

And not the ACLU, a real one. Find me an employee's union for these kinds of industries, one that demands higher minimum wages, more benefits, and more equal pay.

Find me a union for the poultry industry, where most employees are undocumented immigrants and the poor, fighting for their rights as human beings.

Unions historically fight for those who are exploited by the percentages above and historically the middle class fares better when unions achieve proper rights for the labor. Now unless you still think unionization is too close to the terrible C-word that it is instantly bad, you have no reason other than prejudice to see no difference between a corporate entity and a labor rights union.

I don't like seeing poor people out of a job, and yet I wish Wal-Mart would go out of business.

    Sigh.... choices, choices...

Why would you want to see Wal-Mart go out of business? Without Wal-Mart food prices will be driven up even higher and that's on the back of a food shortage, increasing distribution costs and rising inflation.

A bit extreme, but I think that a message to it's shareholders, for example a brief, but very public boycott of its goods and services may be necessary as a warning.

It's not at all uncommon (or illegal) for companies to hold mandatory staff meetings.
