Icon1 Hjálpi! How do I translate unit names?

    Hello there.

I was wondering which files and where in those files do I need to edit
to successfully translate the names/descriptions into my own language?

    Thank you on forehand.

I assume you just mean the display name of the units as seen in-game and not the internal name of the units. In order to change the display name you should only have to edit one file, and that is export_units.txt . You will find this file in your data/text folder, if you have unpacked the files, you'll notice it isn't there, but there is a export_units.txt.strings.bin file. This is because the files in the data/text folder, for whatever reason, aren't unpacked with the unpacker. You'll need to download alpaca's .string.bin converter and follow the instructions to convert those files to a .txt format. Get the converter here:

    http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=75229

Once you've converted it, find the file, and then you can edit all the text outside of the brackets in order to change the display of the unit names and descriptions. Don't make changes to the words inside the brackets or you will need to change multiple other files, and these lines are only relevant internally, so they won't affect your translation(instanced by the fact CA uses the same internal unit names for all of their localisations).

All of these files in the data/text folder manage a different set of display names, so by changing all of them you can have an almost fully translated game, without affecting the code. Here's a short overview of what each file governs, though it's kind of obvious:

battle_descriptions.txt ~ Make changes to the display text to change the description of the Custom battles.
battle_event_subtitles.txt ~ This is the text you see in the battle events, just looking at it you should recognize where it appears.
building_battle.txt ~ This file governs the display name of the building when moused over on the battle map.
campaign_descriptions.txt ~ This file manages the faction names and descriptions that you see in the box on the faction select screen before starting a campaign.
climates.txt ~ This governs I believe the text you see when you right click in a region not on any character/settlement.
cursor_action_tooltips.txt ~ This is the text you see when you mouse over certain things on the campaign map.
diplomacy.txt ~ This is self-explanatory, it is the text you see in the diplomacy screen.
diplomacy_speech.txt ~ This is the text that appears I believe when you first propose a new diplomatic offer or first open the window, filtered by the faction type and relations.
event_strings.txt ~ This is the text you see to describe all the campaign map events which show in those little boxes that come flying down on the left.
event_titles.txt ~ Same as above except governs the event name rather than the description(possibly the one seen when mousing over but not clicking).
expanded.txt ~ This is as it eludes, an expansion file, it governs many miscellaneous text aspects and is where most scripts that need new entries are entered.
    export_advice.txt ~ The advisor speeches
export_ancillaries.txt ~ Name, description, and described effects of the ancillaries. The effects are just for show, adding one here doesn't mean the ancillary gets a new effect, just that it shows up in the description.
export_buildings.txt ~ This governs the text seen in the building descriptions, short, long, and name. If you're doing a translation project this is probably second most important to units.
export_vnvs.txt ~ Vices and Virtues, or traits, and the text that describes them.
factionintrosubtitles.txt ~ Exactly what it says...
historic_battles_subtitles.txt ~ The text shown in the intro to a historic battle.
historic_events.txt ~ The information on historic events, works like the events_strings.txt
imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt ~ Governs the names of provinces and cities.
menu_english.txt ~ This might already have a localised version judging by the file name, but it governs the menu text.
missions.txt ~ Text and name of missions given by guilds, the papal states, and faction councils.
    names.txt ~ Character names
prebattle_speeches_subtitles.txt ~ This is probably shown during pre-battle speeches, though I believe the player needs to have subtitles toggled for it to show up.
quotes.txt ~ The quotes you see on load screens
rebel_faction_descr.txt ~ The names of the rebel factions defined in desc_rebel_factions.txt
religions.txt ~ The names of the religions
shortcut.txt ~ Various UI elements seen on mouseover.

Hope that helps, and again, to do translations just edit the text outside of the brackets, not the internal names, if you edit in the brackets you will get CTDs without changing a LOT of other files if you're doing a full translation. As long as you only change outside the brackets, you should never encounter CTDs, since the game doesn't care what you describe the internal files as, so long as the internal names correspond.

    Cheers,

No problem, the more questions I answer the better grasp I have of the file system myself . Good luck with what is a very extensive translation process, be sure whatever you're doing the translations for is a worthy enough game to deserve the work it will take to fully translate it.

I am having a problem with the convert_all.bat file.

It doesn't extract any files at all and I can't convert anything either, do you know what's going on? :hmmm:

You need to insure that you have Python script installed on your computer, as indicated in the readme. You also need to insure the file strings_bin_converter.py along with convert_all.bat are extracted into your text folder. Then running the .bat will trigger the python conversion script and put the .txt files in the folder.

In my case the py file wasn't associated with python when I tried in my early days. Even so I had python installed.
Simply right click, choose 'open with' and browse to your python installation (usually one of the root directories) and choose the exe file.

Aye, that is exactly what I did.

    Merci.

Maybe this should be stickied if there isn't already a thread like it?

Default Alright, translateted, but not functioning

I could keep on going with all my questions and problems, but oh well..

I've translated some of the display names (Note: Not those in the {})
and now the game won't start properly.

    I've created a MyMod folder and I've run the batch-file I made
(which worked previously) and it looks like the game is about to start - except it tells me to insert the disc. This is rather queer, as the disc is already inserted. :hmmm:

This is what my system.log looks like:

All this has been showing every single time I checked the log.
It looked like this when it worked and now when it doesn't work.

That looks like a normal log....is your disk dirty or scratched?

The commodore is right, something is wrong with your disk. Clean it and try again. Try another CD\DVD as well to check if the fault is not with the drive.

It's near-perfect, I've only had the game for a month or so.

I've kept it in the drive ever since I bought it.

It's never been out, it's just a bit weird...
But thanks for the clue, I'll have a peek at the CD.

It doesn't seem to be the disc, since I can run the launcher (normal M2TW).

Is there a file that indicates if the CD is/isn't inserted? :hmmm:
