Default Low Performance on great computer.

    Hello there,

I decided to install Medieval II again on my computer and I found it slowing down when zooming out in battles with two full armies. It's not too bad, but it is strange for a computer like mine.

My graphic options are all highest (scale is 'huge') with a resolution of 1680x1050.

    My System:

    Intel Core2Quad 6600 (4x2.4 Ghz)
    4 GB Ram
    Geforce 8800 GTS 512
    Windows Vista 64 Bits

Could it be because of a lack of multicore support or is there possibly some other issue?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Well, try turning shadows from extreme to high. Of course if you really want good performance at the sacrifice of visual appeal, turn off antialiasing.

If neither of these help then it must be your processor being unable to handle the numbers. M2TW is very processor hungry I've noticed, with my Athlon 64 2.6ghz, I can only run 2000 or so without big problems, while on RTW I can get 8 to 10000.

I said this in a similar thread in the RTW forum:

"Ok, I am sorry to say I have made a bit of a mistake. It turns out that somehow my torrent program was running without a system tray icon. I guess it was eating up memory or something and RTW is much better now. Thanks for the background thing though, I hadn't thought of that yet stupidly enough...

Also, I tried lowering ll kinds of options but it did not make any difference so I guess the torrent thing really was the culprit.

(Still though MIITW is still a bit choppy...)"
However, with less men on the map MIITW is still worse than RTW. I guess the detail plays a big part. Does anyone know if MII supports multicore?

I don't think it does. On a separate note - Garnier, just curious, is that a dual or single core processor?

Med2 doesn't take advantage of multi-cores. A shame, but understandable considering it was being developed in the years before 2006. But even still, one CPU made today is better than almost any CPU made years ago, so I don't think the CPU is the problem.

No you're right of course, but if MII only uses one of my four cores, amazing as every single one of them may be, that does to me and I hope to a few others ( so my thread is not worthless) explain why I cannot just run this game at hyperspace. I turned down the shadows one notch and it helps a lot. It's smooth now with several thousand troops (I tried around 4000 in a custom battle), but without the multicore support my quad core cannot truly let itself loose upon this game I guess.

This does incidentally up my hopes for performance in Empire since I would expect that to support all four of my cores.

As you've concluded this is the games fault, not your own.

You can expect to run ETW actually better then MTW. Right now the other three cores you possess are all running background tasks, so their not completely useless!

Right now I'm running a duelcore e8400 @4GHZ, and 4GHZ completely destroys this game
